Hurim Interactive Calls on NMS Communications to Enable Voice Internet Service for Korea's Largest Mobile Service Provider

Technology Partnership Allows the World's Fifth Largest Cellular Phone Service Provider, Korea's SK Telecom, to Deliver Wireless Voice Portal Services

NMS Communications (NASDAQ: NMSS), the leading supplier of technology for tomorrow's networks, today announced that Hurim Interactive -- the Korean developer of voice portals, Voice-over-IP, multimedia messaging, voice chatting and related voice services -- has tapped NMS' award-winning IP and PSTN-enabled Convergence Generation(TM) (CG) 6000C voice recognition platform to build a wireless voice portal solution for SK Telecom, Korea's largest and the world's fifth largest mobile phone service provider.

The NMS/Hurim Interactive wireless voice portal solution allows SK Telecom to offer "n.TOP," a voice Internet service for mobile phone users that provides speech-enabled access via a handset to network-driven information across 69 menus of interest including geographic locations, online shopping, travel, entertainment, stocks and the economy. Launched in the spring of 2001, the service currently enjoys approximately 60,000 subscribers nationwide.

As speech-driven applications such as voice portal services play increasingly larger roles in the daily lives of business customers and consumers alike, the demand for reliable, flexible, high-performance solutions such as those made possible via Hurim and NMS will rise. The Kelsey Group, a leading voice and mobile commerce consulting firm, expects the market for key enabling technology (such as speech recognition) for voice portals and other voice-controlled applications to reach $12 billion by 2005, with $5 billion of this total coming from services such as voice-enabled commerce and related applications that deliver instant connections to people, businesses and personalized information via the telephone.

Through the use of NMS' CG6000C platform, Hurim Interactive was able to quickly develop and deliver a wireless voice portal platform customized for SK Telecom's needs. For example, Hurim took full advantage of such CG6000C single-board functionality as conferencing and audio mixing to expedite time-to-market. Notably, using the CG6000C also allowed Hurim to employ a range of barge-in capabilities, an important feature for the continuing improvement of speech recognition within voice portals.

Providing a scalable, reliable, flexible integrated hardware/software platform designed for the rapid creation of next-generation IP-based enhanced services and supporting infrastructures, the CG6000C offers industry-leading high density, complemented by a mature and comprehensive software development environment. The NMS platform also delivers worldwide trunking certifications and high availability features that give communications developers a robust, flexible foundation for building new PSTN-to-IP convergence solutions quickly and cost effectively.

"With NMS, we have chosen one of the very best technology partners possible to help build our platform for Hurim," said Yong-sik Lim, Department Manager at Hurim Interactive. "Capacity, reliability, and quick time-to-market were important factors in choosing a platform for such a large service provider. We are pleased to have found within the CG6000C not only these capabilities, but also important leading-edge functionality such as multiple barge-in options for the continual enhancement of speech recognition capabilities over time."

"NMS is strongly focused on enabling the next generation speech-driven applications and services that are changing the way people conduct their everyday activities," said Brian Demers, vice president and general manager of the New Network Solutions business unit at NMS Communications. "We're thrilled to assist one of the world's largest communications providers to realize this service delivery, and we look forward to continuing to team with Hurim Interactive to bring more services to more leaders throughout Asia."

The CG6000C won this year's Product of the Year Award (in the development platforms category) from Internet Telephony Magazine, which honored the platform for its tightly integrated infrastructure and its ability to support "in the network" deployments.
