Monet Mobile Networks Launches Fast, Mobile Internet Service in Sioux Falls, S.D.

Company Deploys First Data-Only, Next-Generation CDMA2000 Wireless Network in North America

October 25, 2001

Monet Mobile Networks Inc. (formerly Burst Wireless Inc.), a company providing fast, mobile Internet access today announced the launch of its service in Sioux Falls, S.D.

Monet has built and deployed North America's first data-only, CDMA2000 next-generation wireless network in Sioux Falls, allowing people to take the complete Internet wherever they want to go.

An easy-to-install, wireless, PC card modem, compatible with desktop, laptop and handheld PCs, provides the link to Monet's fast data network. Monet's network utilizes CDMA2000 technology, also known as 1xRTT, a proven, next-generation wireless standard developed by Qualcomm. The service will initially rely upon a 1xRTT platform that supports data transmission speeds up to twice the speed of dial-up. The network will be upgraded to 1xEV-DO in 2002, which can support access speeds up to 2.4 Mbps, significantly enhancing data throughput rates for wireless Internet users.

"While many wireless companies are hyping theoretical technology, the best they can do is deliver Space Invaders and Britney Spears ring tones to mobile phones," said George Tronsrue III, CEO, Monet Mobile Networks. "What consumers are looking for is an untethered version of the Internet experience they have come to expect at work, school and home that doesn't require a new device. Monet's technology is both cutting-edge and practical, which is appealing to our customers."

CDMA2000 allows Monet to offer faster data speeds and the company has built its own network optimized for packet data transmission, rather than upgrading a large infrastructure originally built for voice transmission. Unlike other wireless technologies, Monet allows users complete mobility, without being confined to a specific indoor location or campus setting. From a park bench downtown to an off-site business meeting, users can access Monet anywhere in the coverage area.

Monet's service is distinct in combining speed, mobility and a complete Internet experience. The service is provided at a flat, monthly rate and offers instant access to the complete Internet, email, corporate intranet applications, data and customer support. Monet empowers businesses, schools and home users to move from room to room, go outdoors or travel across town and still have access to the Internet experience they have come to expect from their computers at home or at work-on their laptop, desktop or handheld PC.

The availability of anytime Internet access and prevalence of mobile devices has fostered a demand for speed and mobility. The Strategis Group projects mobile data penetration in the United States will reach 60 percent in 2007 from its current level of two percent. They predict this massive growth will be driven by the aggressive rollout of high-speed services.

"Traditionally, broadband Internet service providers have focused on major metropolitan markets, but Monet is taking a new approach: focus on the underserved market," said Tronsrue. "We are thrilled to partner with the people of Sioux Falls to help bridge the digital divide to those who do not have access to other broadband services. The response has been favorable and consumers are enthusiastic about the technology."

Monet has agreements with Novatel Wireless and GTRAN Wireless to provide its PC card modems. The service can be purchased for $49.95 per month and the modem delivered within 48-72 hours. The complete installation takes less than 30 minutes. Monet also offers customer support seven days a week via phone or the Web.
