New Wireless Handheld Device No Longer Binds Thin Clients to the Desk

AthenaUSA Complements Thin-Client Product Line With Hermes Wireless

As AthenaUSA introduced its Hermes Wireless thin client today, company executives discussed how the new device will change how data-intensive industries, such as the medical industry, collect, store and analyze information. The introduction of Hermes Wireless makes AthenaUSA the first specialized thin-client manufacturer to offer a wireless, handheld thin client.

"Many organizations today rely on electronic data to be at their fingertips. Thin-client technology gives businesses quick access and stress-free computing, but the AthenaUSA Hermes takes thin-client computing a step further. No longer do workers have to be at their desk to collect, store and analyze data away from their desk," said Scott D. Nelson, president and CEO of AthenaUSA.

According to Nelson, the AthenaUSA Hermes Wireless is especially suited to doctors and nurses who need to enter patient information quickly and easily. Because the Hermes Wireless is small and weighs less than two pounds, doctors and nurses can carry the device with them as they visit patients. They can view a patient history, enter a diagnosis or send a prescription right from the patient's bedside. The information is sent and stored instantaneously to the hospital network, giving other medical professionals and the patient immediate access to medical information and history.

"We have found that our clients in the medical industry really like the Hermes Wireless, because they rely on quick and easy access to information but don't have time to sort through volumes of paper files. Additionally, the Hermes Wireless helps medical organizations comply with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which mandated regulations that govern privacy, security and electronic transactions standards for healthcare information," said Nelson.

Thin clients are desktop computing devices that contain no moving parts, including no hard drive and no application software. Essentially, thin clients are a terminal, mouse and keyboard, centrally connected to a server that contains the software and applications. The AthenaUSA Hermes Wireless allows organizations to have all the benefits of thin-client technology, but doesn't tie workers to their desk or workstation.

The AthenaUSA Hermes Wireless is hooked up to the organization's network through an access router that stays on workers' desks. Workers can leave their desk or workstation and still access all their company files, the Internet, and e-mail through the Hermes Wireless as long as they are within 300 feet from an access router. The Hermes Wireless communicates with the organization's network via an 802.11b radio frequency network card, which is already installed in every device.

AthenaUSA specializes in only thin-client technology, so the Hermes Wireless completes the AthenaUSA thin-client product line. Ready to go out of the box, the Hermes Wireless operates on Windows CE 3.0 and retails for $1,699.
