Company Donates Free Phones to State College Area Family YMCA

Local businesses interested in increasing productivity and maximizing resources can now access the first "four-in-one" digital wireless service available in State College, Altoona, Johnstown, Philipsburg, Williamsport and Lock Haven, Pa.

This comes with today's official launch of Nextel Partners' all-digital wireless network in Central Pennsylvania, with services combining digital cellular, digital two-way radio, wireless Internet access and text/numeric messaging, all in one compact phone.

The service expansions complete Nextel's coverage of the entire Pennsylvania Turnpike corridor, an essential travel route for Central Pennsylvania businesses. In addition to Central Pennsylvania, the company also is introducing service today in Cumberland, Md.

Nextel Donates to YMCA

In conjunction with its launch, Nextel Partners is donating 10 wireless phones and free local service for a year to the State College Area Family YMCA to increase the safety of local youth and YMCA staff, a total donation valued at nearly $15,000. Nextel Partners will officially present the donation to the State College Area Family YMCA today, Wednesday, October 17 at 4:00 p.m. at the Mt. Nittany Club, located inside of Beaver Stadium. The event then continues at the Horace Ashenfelter Multi-Sports Facility and Indoor Track in State College.

As part of the event, 60 kids from the YMCA will test their skills in the inaugural "Nextel Challenge." The kids will compete in a variety of fun activities designed to encourage teamwork and communication. Kids will race in a variety of "Nextel Challenge" activities, including: the Digital Dash (50-yard run), the Telephone Toss (football throw), and the Wireless Waddle (potato sack race).

The donation marks the first time the organization has received wireless phones also equipped with a digital two-way radio, a feature that will provide YMCA staff instant communication to other co-workers or local officials in case of an emergency. The phones will help improve overall communication and safety both at the YMCA's centers and off-site, such as when YMCA staff and children are on field trips.

"Nextel Partners' donation, particularly the phone's two-way radio feature, is the perfect tool to help us coordinate among staff and volunteers to keep our programs running smoothly and ensure the safety of our kids - our top priority," said Cindy Price, Youth Team Director for the State College Area Family YMCA.
