NMS Communications Chosen by IdeaWurx to Power its Short Message Service (SMS) Solution for Philippines' Largest Cellular Network Providers

NMS' Award-Winning Platform Leveraged for Largest SMS Market Worldwide; PhoneTxt System Handles 10 Percent of the World's SMS Messages

October 29, 2001

NMS Communications (NASDAQ: NMSS), the leading supplier of technology for tomorrow's networks, today announced that IdeaWurx, a telecommunication solutions provider and integrator based in the Philippines, selected the company's award-winning voice processing technology to power PhoneTxt, a ground-breaking short message service (SMS) solution currently used by two of the Philippines' largest carriers - Globe Telecom and Philippine Long Distance Telephony Company (PLDT).

Short message services are brief text messages created using a phone keypad and transmitted via cell phone. The PhoneTxt SMS solution provides enhanced SMS functionality to carriers, by making it possible to access the SMS system of any cellular network operator using a landline phone. PhoneTxt allows messages to be created via voice prompts over the telephone, and sent to a cellular phone as text characters. Globe Telecom currently uses PhoneTxt for its 1-900-TXT service, which includes SMS services as well as text services that provide movie schedules, horoscopes and daily quotations. PLDT also offers IdeaWurx's solution through its PLDT 135 PhoneTxt System and Smart cell phones. Recognized as an innovative new product, IdeaWurx's PhoneTxt solution has won the Philippine's Center for International Trade Expositions and Missions (CITEM) 2001 product of the year award.

The Philippines is considered to have one of the highest SMS traffic rates in not only Asia, but also the entire world. Globe Telecom and PLDT each currently process an average of 90 million SMS text messages per day, a number that accounts for 10-15 percent of the world's SMS traffic. The popularity of the PhoneTxt landline testing capability is also significant, with the two carriers already enabling 20,000 and 40,000 landline text messages per day respectively. According to the GSM Association, a leading representative body in the global wireless industry, SMS traffic is growing rapidly and is projected to reach a rate of over 200 billion SMS messages sent in 2001.

The IdeaWurx PhoneTxt solution is an NMS-based NT Server platform that can process Land Line text messaging at a rate of 120 simultaneous messages. It has fault tolerant features and is scalable from 30 to hundreds of ports. It has a reporting system that allows users to view port activities and the progress of calls within the system. With an open architecture that mirrors NMS' standards, PhoneTxt can be integrated to any Fixed line and Mobile networks in just days.

Using NMS' AG 4000 voice processing platform, IdeaWurx was able to take advantage of carrier-grade density, unmatched capacity and price/performance leadership. Additionally, NMS' DSP architecture delivers an open development environment, a rich set of features, built-in scalability, and increased processing power – resulting in quicker time to market for its PhoneTxt solution. Specific AG 4000 capabilities include: Scalability and density — Density of 120 ports per board reduces hardware costs and provides room for growth.Support for multiple applications — Multiple voice and call processing applications are supported on the same hardware, including fax, IP voice, and interactive voice response (IVR). Network ubiquity — The AG 4000 supports interfaces to the public switched telephone network (PSTN) as well as next-generation voice-over-IP networks. PhoneTxt has pioneered the way for SMS by bridging the gap between wireline and wireless SMS networks, and NMS provided an integral piece in helping us build this innovative solution," said Joel Saul, president of IdeaWurx, Inc. "We knew we could rely on the AG 4000's industry-proven capacity and scalability, as well as its open architecture, to provide high-volume landline text message processing to market quickly and cost-effectively." "Our voice processing platform has been both versatile and the preferred choice by our customers, to build enhanced voice services of all kinds – including voice portals, interactive voice response (IVR), and speech-driven customer service," said Brian Demers, vice president and general manager of the New Network Solutions business unit at NMS Communications. "We are pleased that this platform has been able to also contribute to the advancement of mobile short message service capabilities as well, and look forward to supporting IdeaWurx as they continue to innovate in this exciting area of telecommunications."
