Pico Communications Announces Strategic Relationship With Microsoft to Deliver Bluetooth Connectivity for the Pocket PC 2002

Leading Provider of Bluetooth Networking Technology Selected as Microsoft Mobile Solutions Partner

Pico Communications Inc., a provider of simplified personal networking solutions for Bluetooth(TM) devices and an associate member of the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG), today announced a strategic relationship with Microsoft Corp.(R) to provide wireless connectivity for the Windows Powered Pocket PC 2002 Software.

Pico's PicoBlue(TM) Internet Access Point enables mobile professionals to stay securely connected to their corporate Local Area Network (LAN) and the Internet at work, on the road, and at home with the Pocket PC 2002 software for personal digital assistants (PDAs).

In addition to working with Microsoft as a Pocket PC 2002 launch partner, Pico has been selected to participate in the Mobile Solutions Partner Program, a worldwide initiative that brings together a community of like-minded developers to build and expand the mobile information revolution. The program is a key focus for Microsoft in helping its partners to develop cutting-edge solutions (applications, consulting and deployment, information services) based on Microsoft's mobility platform and technologies.

The PicoBlue Internet Access Point will be promoted by Microsoft to millions of Pocket PC 2002 users as a premier product that utilizes the benefits of the Windows Powered Pocket PC.

"Pocket PC 2002 has a great advantage in the marketplace because it is designed to be the most connected and expandable PDA available," said Chris Hill, product manager, Microsoft. "We are pleased that Pico Communications is taking advantage of the new feature functionalities of Pocket PC 2002 and providing the next-generation access technology that enables low-powered Bluetooth connectivity to the Internet."

The PicoBlue Internet Access Point is a complete Bluetooth access point with integrated servers and networking features required for IP enterprise networking over Ethernet. PicoBlue was the first Class One point-to-multipoint access point to achieve 1.1 certification from the Bluetooth Qualification Body in June 2001. It can manage up to seven simultaneous links, allowing seven users to share access to the Internet at one time. In order to achieve wireless connectivity through PicoBlue, the Pocket PC 2002 must be equipped with a CompactFlash(TM) Type I Card with the Bluetooth LAN Access Profile.

"PicoBlue offers an all-in-one access solution with built-in server functionality to further enhance the mobility of the Pocket PC 2002," said Dr. Lung Yeh, president and CEO of Pico Communications. "We believe Bluetooth wireless technology will become the preferred way for mobile professionals to gain secure access to the Internet and real-time corporate information from their PDAs."
