Rutgers School of Communication Chooses 3Com to Drive Technology-Based Curriculum

3Com Voice, Wireless and Switching Solutions Beat the Competition

October 30, 2001

3Com Corporation (Nasdaq:COMS) announced today that Rutgers University's School of Communication, Information and Library Studies (SCILS) is using 3Com(R) networked telephony, LAN switching and wireless network solutions to deliver its graduate and undergraduate degree programs to students. Launched this summer, 3Com systems enable SCILS to deliver a unique curriculum designed to give its students the tools to evaluate, implement and manage information technology in a wide range of organizations.

After evaluating systems from several vendors, Rutgers standardized on 3Com because of its products' superior price/performance and proven track record in the education marketplace. Utilizing the 3Com NBX(R) 100 Communications System, 65 NBX phones, all of which plug into any network port, and 3Com SuperStack(R) 3 Fast Ethernet switches, Rutgers is now teaching and using networked telephony to improve its communication.

The SCILS is also extending wireless LAN connectivity to students across its three campus buildings using 12 3Com AirConnect(R) wireless LAN access points and PC Cards. In addition, the 3Com Ethernet Power Source provides a single source of electrical power for each of the school's NBX phones and access points at substantial savings in wiring costs.

"3Com's solutions plug easily into large mixed-vendor networks such as ours and provide an excellent platform for teaching our students how to use technology in their work," said Jon Oliver, assistant dean and director of Information Technology, SCILS. "The quality and responsiveness of 3Com's sales and service people also can't be beat."

Renowned for their plug-and-play setup and interoperability, 3Com networked telephony, switching and wireless networking products deliver non-stop availability for educational and corporate customers. 3Com setup wizards make product configuration a breeze, and built-in Web-based management lets network administrators easily manage wireless access lists and telephone adds, moves and changes on site or remotely via a standard Web browser, with no need for expensive consultants or additional dedicated personnel.

21st Century Voice and Wireless Communications

Rutgers' SCILS program is incorporating wireless networking as well as networked telephony as both day-to-day tools and subject areas for study. Using laptops connected to the 3Com wireless LAN, professors and students can now easily gather in any of the lounges, hallways and 11 SCILS classrooms to work on team projects like "How to Build a Library Infrastructure." Professors even use their NBX phones to conference in guest speakers for various classes.

Using the 3Com wireless LAN, SCILS students can access Adobe Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Microsoft Office and the specialized library cataloguing software they need for various projects. They can also reach the Internet, SCILS email and Web servers and subscription services like Lexus/Nexus, Dialog, Dow Jones and ProQuest.

"3Com's easy-to-use products not only help us communicate better, but they also shape the way we teach and think about communication," said dean Oliver. "Using 3Com solutions, we've strengthened our curriculum and simplified our administration. We expect to grow with 3Com voice and data solutions for many years to come."
