3Com Extends Wireless LAN -WLAN- Strategy with Support for New IEEE High-Speed Wireless Standard 802.11a

November 7, 2001

As a leading provider of WLAN solutions supporting IEEE 802.11b and Bluetooth technologies, 3Com Corporation (Nasdaq: COMS) today announced that its wireless LAN strategy will include 5 GHz solutions based on the IEEE 802.11a specification. Expected to become available worldwide by mid calendar year 2002, 3Com's 802.11a WLAN products will give businesses the tools needed for their bandwidth-hungry wireless LAN applications.

3Com intends to deliver solutions based on the 802.11a high-speed wireless specification in response to feedback from customers requiring even faster WLAN capabilities, while leveraging the rapid adoption of existing 802.11b and Bluetooth networks.

3Com's WLAN Infrastructure

3Com's Business Networks Company (BNC) provides network infrastructures to enterprises and small businesses that are easy to use and affordable to own. BNC offers a range of wireless solutions including the newest addition, the Access Point 6000, which offers uniquely simple deployment, management, and security capabilities.

"As standards continue to develop, 3Com is committed to providing customers with secure, high quality wireless LAN solutions," said Patrick Guay, vice president and general manager, LAN Infrastructure Division, 3Com's Business Networks Company. "Our focus is to enable businesses to leverage the new higher speed wireless LAN technology when they need to, and when standards evolve to a level which ensures co-existence with existing wireless LAN technologies such as 802.11b. We will continue to offer differentiated, standards-based offerings in wireless, delivering unprecedented security and performance."

As an active member of the current standards body, 3Com intends to ensure that specific issues are resolved including: enterprise security, affordability, co-existence with 802.11b networks, scalability from 802.11b to higher data bandwidth technologies, 802.11a standards compliance and interoperability testing, and 802.11g standards closure.

3Com's WLAN Access

3Com's Business Connectivity Company (BCC) currently offers two technologies for wireless communications: Wi-Fi-certified wireless LAN products and Bluetooth wireless products. Bluetooth radios operate in the unlicensed 2.4 GHz spectrum, the same wavelength used by Wi-Fi wireless networking products that comply with the IEEE 802.11b specification. 3Com BCC believes that both technologies are important in the business environment, public locations and the home and is committed to giving its customers a range of technology options.

"3Com will deliver 802.11a wireless clients as customers' performance demands increase and as global standards become harmonized," said Rick Maule, general manager and vice president, product and business management, 3Com's Business Connectivity Company. "3Com's 802.11a strategy is coordinated with its 802.11b and Bluetooth strategies and will enable users to overcome potential conflicts in regional and technical deployment with intelligent client solutions."
