November 13, 2001

Borland Software Corporation (Nasdaq NM:BORL) today announced the immediate availability of Borland(R) JBuilder(TM) MobileSet 1.03 for the rapid development of mobile and wireless applications for the Java(TM) 2 Platform, Mobile Edition (J2ME(TM)). Using Borland(R) JBuilder(TM), the market leading Java development environment, with JBuilder MobileSet enables companies to easily build, debug and deploy applications to a wide range of devices. The new JBuilder MobileSet features support for the J2ME Wireless Toolkit 1.0.3, a new J2ME emulation environment for mobile devices from Sun Microsystems. The addition of the J2ME Wireless Toolkit adds Sun to the list of Borland supported vendors that already includes Nokia and Siemens.

Today's announcement marks the next step in the company's strategy to provide a complete development environment across multiple wireless platforms as well as seed the growing market for mobile Java development, while increasing the installed base of JBuilder, which works in conjunction with MobileSet.

"Sun welcomes the Borland JBuilder MobileSet 1.03 support for the J2ME Wireless Toolkit," said Ken Tallman, Group Marketing Manager, Java Software for Sun Microsystems, Inc. "This technology addition will further speed and simplify the development of industry standard J2ME applications and increase acceptance of wireless standards."

According to research from the Gartner Group, J2ME is expected to become a dominant technology for building local IT-centric applications and may be leveraged by up to 65 percent of wireless phones. As an early leader in providing Java technology for mobile and wireless developers, Borland seeks to set the standard for the Java technology development market. Key partnerships with industry leaders such as Sun Microsystems advance Borland's position.

"Borland is committed to continued leadership in Java development for wireless and mobile devices," said Tony de la Lama, vice president and general manager of Java solutions for Borland. "Offering our expertise in Java to the rapidly emerging wireless market is a natural step for Borland. This release builds on our previous partnerships with Nokia and Siemens to build world-class development environments for the J2ME platform."
