Industry's First Pen-based Mini-Notebook Improves Screen Technology, Adds Wireless Capabilities to Increase Overall Functionality

Weighing 3.3 pounds Fujitsu's Full-Featured LifeBook(R) B Series is Perfect for Productive Field, Road Computing

Fujitsu PC Corporation (FPC), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Fujitsu Limited (TSE:6702), today released an enhanced version of its award-winning, pen-based LifeBook(R) B Series.

Fujitsu's mini-notebook stands alone from the competition through the integration of a standard pen-enabled touch screen, making it ideal for mobile professionals in the field and on the road. The innovative pen-based technology is implemented in a new 10.4-inch XGA TFT display providing users with a large surface to easily navigate and access data using a stylus. Additionally, the display features an anti-reflective coating for improved outdoor viewing.

Another new feature of the pen-based LifeBook B Series is the integration of IEEE 802.11b wireless LAN technology. This convenient addition allows users to seamlessly roam throughout a wireless network and enhances the overall portability of the mini-notebook. This wireless technology operates in the industry standard 2.4GHz spectrum at speeds of up to 11 Mbps and delivers Ethernet levels of performance. Fujitsu plans to ship units outfitted with the integrated 802.11b wireless LAN in December.

"The LifeBook B Series represents Fujitsu's unprecedented leadership in the development of feature-rich, ultra-portable computing technology," said Sara Nelson, vice president of marketing, Fujitsu PC Corporation. "Combining the latest wireless capabilities with Fujitsu's exclusive pen-enabled touch screen technology and compact form factor sets the LifeBook B Series apart in an extremely competitive marketplace."

Its compact and ultra-portable design measures 9.92 inches wide by 8.5 inches deep by 1.26 inches high, and weighs less than three pounds with a main (three-cell) Lithium ion battery installed and 3.3 pounds with the standard high capacity (six-cell) battery. The high capacity battery increases computing life by up five hours(1). Adding to its appeal is an enhanced magnesium-alloy casing, which contributes to the notebooks overall durability and lowers its total cost of ownership.

A leader in the development of innovative mobile computing solutions, Fujitsu's mini-notebook is powered by a 700MHz mobile Intel(R) Pentium(R) III ultra low voltage processor-M and 512K on-die L2 cache. The new and improved processing technology provides improved performance by running cooler, faster and extending battery life. The mini-notebook boasts an ATI(R) RAGE(TM) Mobility-M1 video controller with 8MB of video memory to maximize the functionality of the high resolution XGA display.

The LifeBook B Series is also one of the first notebooks available with the option of new Microsoft(R) Windows(R) XP Home or Windows XP Professional, as well as Windows 98 Second Edition or Windows 2000 Professional pre-installed. Microsoft's latest operating system offers remote access, security, performance and manageability features to increase overall user productivity.

The LifeBook B Series will ship in mid-November in two recommended configurations and can also be customized to meet individual user needs by utilizing Fujitsu's Configure To Order (CTO) Program. The estimated street price will start at $1,9992. Fujitsu's LifeBooks are sold through FPC's retail and reseller channels3 as well as at www.fujitsupc.com or 1-877-FPC-DIRECT.

Fujitsu offers a variety of communication options to extend the functionality of its mini-notebook. All LifeBook B Series include a connectivity combo port consisting of either a built-in 56K(4) V.90 modem and 10/100 base-Tx Ethernet for high-speed Internet access or the combination of a modem and IEEE 1394 for fast digital communication capabilities.

In addition to having a variety of communications options and operating systems to choose from, users can further personalize the LifeBook B Series with the option of a 30GB or 20GB hard drive(5) and 256MB or 128MB system memory.

Other popular business features include a standard VGA port for presentation delivery, an IR port and two USB ports for device expansion. The LifeBook B Series also comes with an external USB floppy disk drive and two Type II or one Type III PC Card slots, as well as an optional CD-ROM drive. A security panel and built-in Smart Card Reader(6) help to ensure the integrity of data and value personal information.

The LifeBook B Series features an extensive suite of accessories including a modular one-click port replicator, which allows users to expand the number of ports available and receive better cable management.
