Motorola and Maxim Provide Wireless Access to the Real World

November 13, 2001

Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) and Dallas Semiconductor, a wholly owned subsidiary of Maxim Integrated Products (Nasdaq: MXIM) today announced a solution that provides wireless access to devices with little or no processing power through Java™ technology-enabled mobile handsets from Motorola.

The solution allows connectivity between Motorola handsets with Java 2 Platform, Micro Edition (J2ME™) technology and Dallas Semiconductor's Tiny InterNet Interfaces (TINI®). The TINI Chipset connects directly to the Internet and brings networking and local hosting to a wide variety of on-line monitoring and control devices such as heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) units, security equipment and vending machines. With the TINI Verification Module, a reference implementation of the chipset, even discrete sensors and actuators can be wirelessly accessed via the Internet by the Motorola handset.

"This alliance shows Motorola's leadership in the wireless application area by allowing developers to rapidly deploy powerful, flexible mobile solutions," said Peter Aloumanis, vice president of Motorola and director of U.S. market operations for the company's iDEN® Subscriber Group. "We are empowering developers, value-added resellers (VARs) and software integrators (SIs) by facilitating the development of applications and solutions."

"The TINI Runtime Environment allows developers to create compelling wireless applications for automating homes, offices and factories that can run on both the Motorola handset and the TINI web server," said Michael Bolan, vice president of Dallas Semiconductor/Maxim. "This solution extends the reach of the wired network and leverages wireless infrastructure at a fraction of the cost of PC-based solutions."

The TINI Verification Module DSTINI1 is available at www.iButton.com/TINI for $67. A software package with working tutorial and sample code are available through the Motorola iDEN Developer Support Program at www.motorola.com/idendev.
