Nokia and eurosport.com announce cooperation in Multimedia Messaging Services

November 16, 2001

Nokia and eurosport.com today agreed on a cooperation to develop eurosport.com content adapted for Multimedia Messaging Services (MMS). In the near future, subscribers to the Eurosport MMS service will be able to receive sports headlines with color images and audio clips directly on their phones. With the fast delivery enabled by MMS, subscribers can get fully-illustrated sports news in real-time.

It will be possible to offer specially targeted content to specific groups, such as the winning goal of the day's top match to football fans, the Formula 1 podium to car racing fans or audio interviews of the top seeds to tennis fans. The content of this service can also be tailor-made for each target group in their own language.

"Multimedia Messaging is a new, rich and standardised medium for developing and delivering ready-made content. Building on the success of SMS, it enriches the consumer experience of modern media consumption. This cooperation with eurosport.com is a good example of the enormous potential of Multimedia Messaging Services", said Anssi Vanjoki, Executive Vice President, Nokia Mobile Phones.

"Sport comes alive with images and sounds. We are therefore delighted with the opportunities MMS provides, enabling us to deliver our sports content via mobile phones enriched with pictures and audio clips for the benefit of sports fans", said Laurent-Eric LeLay, Deputy Managing Director, Head of Acquisitions and New Media, Eurosport.

Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS) enables personalized, versatile messaging content. The new mobile generation favours messaging and visual content over traditional voice calls. For them messaging is the natural way to communicate as it is personal, instant and location independent. MMS transforms mobile phones into multimedia devices, personal trusted devices for work and leisure, and tools for sharing personal experiences.

An "instant" culture encompassing new communication styles and needs is emerging. The Internet is going mobile. The success of SMS, the emergence of a new mobile phone generation, growing Internet and e-mail penetration and usage - all suggest a huge potential for Multimedia Messaging Services.

Multimedia Messaging Services facilitate new styles of communication that respond to the needs of a society where business and personal lifestyles are changing and evolving ever faster. Nokia's approach is based upon a series of evolutionary steps: text messaging (text only), picture messaging (text and graphics) and MMS -Multimedia Messaging Service (first phase: still images, graphics, voice or audio clips and text, later also video clips). MMS is the most versatile standardised messaging service to date. Multimedia Messaging Service is an open standard supported by 3GPP and WAP Forum and it is bearer independent.
