Ricoh, www.ricohzone.com, today introduced a breakthrough in digital imaging that combines 802.11 technology with Ricoh's RDC-i700 wireless Internet-ready digital camera. The iMove (Internet Mobile Observation Equipment) system converts the RDC-i700 into a real-time image transmission device allowing off-site project managers to receive live video feeds from surveillance teams in the field.
The iMove system is designed to help dispersed business teams monitor time-critical projects, easily and inexpensively. The compact, handheld camera can broadcast what it "sees" at 320x240 pixels to a Web browser at a rate of 10fps (frames per second) providing a revolutionary means to visually collaborate over great distances. Once logged on to the camera's built-in graphical Web interface, remote viewers can control the camera in a variety of ways. Users can also capture ultra-high-resolution 3 million pixel images that are automatically transferred to a secure photo sharing and archiving site.
"Mobile remote monitoring and surveillance has always required a significant investment in video equipment and broadcast-savvy operators, making it impractical for most time and budget sensitive projects," said Jeff Lengyel of Ricoh's Digital Camera Division. "The Ricoh iMove system is a breakthrough in digital imaging technology that makes remote mobile surveillance a realistic and critical component of any project. It saves time and money, significantly reducing the number of onsite inspections and empowering project leaders to make more informed decisions remotely."
Featuring a weatherproof housing for the compact RDC-i700, the solution is suited for any environment and weather condition and is ideal for use in the construction, medical and disaster assistance industries.
The iMove system includes video archiving of all the feed sent by the camera, thus providing a visual record of everything captured by the camera. Multiple cameras may be monitored simultaneously, allowing for multiple camera deployments. The operating range of the camera is 300 feet from the access point when using 802.11, or up to 3 miles by using proprietary wireless systems. Users connected to the access point server can access the camera's unique IP address from anywhere in the world.
At $2,500, the complete iMove system includes the RDC-i700 digital camera, a palm-sized 802.11 bridge to talk to any access point and a PCMCIA LAN card. The weatherproof housing allows the system to operate in harsh environmental conditions. The iMove system is available now by calling Ricoh at 909/890-9039.
The iMove system has recently been deployed in hospitals so physicians can have a virtual presence as interns make patient rounds, and in construction sites where inspectors and construction leads can collaborate on project conditions and completion points for determining next-steps. The RDC-i700 is an ultra-portable business productivity solution for anywhere, anytime image communications that took Time Magazine's Innovation of the Year Award. The 3.34-megapixel, Internet-ready RDC-i700 captures crisp images and video, sends and receives e-mail including attachments, sends images of documents directly to fax machines, surfs the Web, creates image-rich documents and HTML files, and can FTP data and images directly from the camera.
