Siemens Information and Communication Mobile LLC today announced its support for Cingular Wireless, the second largest wireless carrier in the U.S., as the company this week revealed its plan to upgrade its mobile network to third generation (3G) wireless data technology. Cingular has announced that it will evolve to the 3G technology EDGE (Enhanced Data Rates for Global Evolution) after installing GPRS (General Packet Radio Service), enabling mobile internet services and GSM (Global System for Mobile Telecommunications) voice technology over its TDMA and analog networks.

As part of its announcement, Cingular also revealed that it has selected Siemens to assist with the infrastructure build out as well as to supply GSM/TDMA dual-technology mobile phones operating at 850 MHz and 1900 MHz.

"With a strong GSM presence among more than 150 customers in Europe and Asia, Siemens will now have a significant opportunity to extend its global reputation into the North American market," said Rudi Lamprecht, Member of the Managing Board at Siemens.

Siemens is committed to supporting Cingular as it makes the transition to the 3G mobile networks. GSM has emerged as the world's leading wireless standard, with more than 590 million subscribers that account for over 70 percent of the digital wireless market. Siemens has promised to assist Cingular for several years by providing significant volumes of both GSM/GPRS/EDGE network infrastructure that operates on 850 MHz and 1900 MHz of GSM while also providing the ability to roam into existing TDMA networks in North and South America while using a single mobile phone.
