SiRF Powers Navman GPS Solution for Compaq iPAQ

SiRFstarII GPS Architecture at the Heart of New Navman i Series GPS

November 13, 2001

SiRF Technology, Inc., a leading developer of global positioning system (GPS)-enabled location technologies and Navman, a leading designer and manufacturer of world-class GPS, communication and marine products, today announced that the new Navman i series GPS solution, a location-aware add-on for Compaq's iPAQ Pocket PC family, will feature SiRFstar(TM)II architecture. SiRF's chips and software technology enable a complete GPS-based location intelligence solution for many consumer devices.

The SiRFstarII GPS architecture offers a range of product choices enabling complete GPS functionality that is high performance, yet in a very small footprint, making it an ideal solution for integration into compact consumer devices such as PDAs and cell phones. Unique features of SiRFstarII include SnapStart(TM) for quick start-up, SnapLock(TM) for fast acquisition and FoliageLock(TM) for high sensitivity environments. These features provide enhanced GPS-based location information in urban canyons and dense foliage -- where traditional GPS architectures have significant problems. Additionally, the SiRFstarII power management feature, TricklePower(TM), enables a longer battery life for portable devices.

Navman USA selected SiRFstarII architecture because of its high integration and high performance -- which represent some of the key design requirements for today's PDA add-ons. The Navman i series GPS jacket provides positioning information for users to turn their Compaq iPAQ into a powerful navigation tool.

"There is an obvious synergy between Navman and SiRF, with our shared vision of enhancing the quality of people's lives by bringing location-awareness to all mobile devices," said Kanwar Chadha, founder and vice president of SiRF Technology, Inc. "By teaming with an established GPS player like Navman, who has solid relationships in the retail and manufacturing sectors, we are able to deliver location technology to the masses through consumer, automotive and marine GPS-enabled products."

"Our mission since 1989 has been to bring down the cost and size of embedding sophisticated GPS technology into mainstream consumer products like PDAs," said Jeff Fellows, president, Navman USA. "We choose our partners very carefully as well as our target platforms and markets. SiRF not only delivers a highly accurate, affordable, compact and flexible GPS solution, but also the company's vision of -- and product roadmap for -- making location-awareness viable for consumer products mirrors our own. Our partnership is a natural fit."
