3Com's 11 Mbps Wireless LAN Solution Excels with Unique Security Features and Simple Setup

3Com Corporation (Nasdaq: COMS) today announced that the 3Com(R) 11 Mbps Wireless LAN Solution, which includes the Access Point 6000 and PC Card with XJACK(R) antenna, earned Reviewer's Choice and "Best Bang for the Buck" in a competitive review by Government Computer News. Published by Post-Newsweek Business Information Inc. (PNBI) of Vienna, Va., Government Computer News is the number one newspaper for managers who buy and specify information technology for federal, state and local governments. The review also appeared in the Business Section of the Washington Post on Thursday, November 29th.

In the November 19, 2001 issue, Government Computer News evaluated six wireless networking products based on the IEEE 802.11b standard, for security, real-life transfer rates, price, usability and global compatibility. The article notes that 3Com's solution was the "most secure and best-priced product the lab staff reviewed." The test also looked at products from Cisco, Agere, Linksys, SMC, and D-Link.

One of the key features highlighted in the review was 3Com's Dynamic Security Link, a unique security mechanism supporting username/password authentication. Unlike standard 40-bit Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) keys that are the same for all users and must be changed manually, the Access Point 6000 protects the network from the intrusion of unauthorized users by automatically generating a unique 128-bit encryption key for each user on the network at the beginning of each networking session. In addition, an optional username/password feature is included, giving smaller organizations authentication capabilities similar to those available in the RADIUS-based systems used by large enterprises.

The Access Point 6000 is priced at $599 (US List) while the Wireless LAN PC Card with XJACK antenna is priced at $175 (US List). Both products are available now worldwide.
