Allied Telesyn Enables Wireless From the Desktop with PCI Adapter

PCI Adapter Allows Wireless PC Cards to be Used in Standard PCs and Workstations

December 19, 2001

Allied Telesyn International (www.alliedtelesyn.com), a worldwide leader in simplifying networking for businesses of all sizes, announced today the availability of its AT-WRPCI wireless PCI adapter card.

The AT-WRPCI adapter installs into an available PCI slot in a PC or workstation and then accepts Allied Telesyn's popular WR2411 wireless radio card for hassle-free connection to a network.

Wireless networking continues to grow in popularity, particularly with mobile users, due in most part to the fact that an expensive cabling infrastructure can be avoided. Standards such as the IEEE's 802.11b have made reliable wireless communication between multiple computers, appliances, and the Internet a reality, enabling users to experience the many benefits of networking in hard to wire locations, in conference rooms and public areas where configurations are frequently changed.

"Network moves, adds and changes can become a nightmare for administrators trying to provide hardwire connections to computers", said Jim Berthot, Head of the Americas and Senior Vice President of Allied Telesyn. "Removing the physical need to plug into a network is the key to wireless flexibility and businesses recognize that they can benefit further by giving PC and workstation users a similar capability currently enjoyed by mobile workers with laptop computers."

The new AT-WRPCI PCI adapter perfectly complements Allied Telesyn's AT-WL2411 wireless access point and AT-WR2411 radio card to provide a top-of-the-line wireless network. The advanced security and high-end management features of the AT-WL2411 access point create a wireless network that performs like a wired network - but users can take their connectivity with them. Based on the 802.11b specification, the AT-WR2411 radio card offers a high performance solution with full support for both 40-bit and 128-bit WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy) security, with ZERO throughput degradation.

When installed, the AT-WRPCI/WR2411 combination operates at ranges up to 1.5 times further than competitors' offerings. The longer operating range permits superior coverage delaying, and possibly eliminating, the expenditure for additional access points. Automatic rate selection dynamically supports 11, 5.5, 2, and 1 Mbps for maximum availability and reliability of network connections. The proper data rate is determined automatically.

The AT-WRPCI is now available for immediate shipment at a US List price of $60.
