Andrew Seybold's Wireless University 4Mobility to Focus on Realities in Session Preceding Consumer Electronics Show

December 7, 2001

Mobile computing and communications devices are becoming user-friendly, high-speed wireless data networks needed to support them are being implemented, and attendees at the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES, Las Vegas, Jan. 8-11) can learn the specifics and the implications of these trends at a session of Andrew Seybold's Wireless University 4Mobility in Las Vegas on Jan. 7, immediately prior to CES' opening day.

"We expect business customers to be the most aggressive initial adopters of the technology, with consumers coming on board as recognition of wireless data and wireless Internet spreads," Seybold said.

"In fact, the technology makes no distinction between business users and consumers, and there is no difference in terms of the opportunity presented to the consumer electronics industry. For many, the future may depend on an ability to understand and sell wireless solutions, and the Wireless University 4Mobility is designed as an educational program that provides a solid grounding on which to build that future."

Andrew Seybold's Wireless University 4Mobility is an all-day program featuring two separate morning educational tracks conducted by analysts/partners Andrew M. Seybold and Barney L. Dewey, followed by an afternoon session consisting of interactive panel discussions. Sessions take place in the North Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center.

Seybold's track, "Fundamentally Speaking: The Basics of Wireless Communications," will examine the various wireless technologies in use today as well as look extensively at the status and capabilities of the various high-speed data solutions (2.5G, 3G) that are being implemented domestically and abroad.

Additionally, he will explore available in-building wireless network systems (Bluetooth, WiFi), the marriage of computing and communications, and chart the progress and potential of the Wireless Internet.

Dewey's track, "Wireless Networks, Applications and Services," will examine trends in the wireless marketplace in terms of applications and will analyze the "Wireless Hype Cycle," injecting reality into the current sea of promotion.

Dewey will also contrast the success of NTT DoCoMo's i-mode in the Japanese market with the failure of WAP in the United States and elsewhere; explore the positive and negative issues affecting wireless location technology; assess the impact of Bluetooth on wireless applications and services; and define his concept of "Active Content" as a must-have, high-revenue service for device manufacturers and network providers.

The afternoon session, in which both partners participate, is titled "What's Coming, What's Hot?" and will include the participation of industry experts and session attendees.
