HP becomes first handheld manufacturer to offer Bitstream's breakthrough, wireless Web browsing technology

Bitstream Inc. (NASDAQ: BITS) announced today that it is working with Hewlett-Packard Company to offer Bitstream's wireless Web browsing technology -- ThunderHawk(TM) -- to HP Jornada customers with separately purchased modems. HP is the first handheld manufacturer to offer ThunderHawk to its installed base and new HP Jornada PDA customers.

The product release of ThunderHawk for the HP Jornada 540 and 560 series will be available for a free 30-day trial in early 2002. Customers who have the HP Jornada 540 and 560 series of PDAs will be able to download ThunderHawk from the Bitstream Web site at http://www.bitstream.com/wireless/hp.

ThunderHawk's technology brings the desktop Web browsing experience to Jornada users with separately purchased modems. It allows a Pocket PC, which typically has a 320x240 color LCD display, to display a legible VGA (640x480) screen of a Web page. Side-by-side comparisons of typical browsers running on a Pocket PC device and ThunderHawk can be viewed on Bitstream's Web site (http://www.bitstream.com/wireless). Bitstream has filed 13 preliminary patents in the U.S. on ThunderHawk and its underlying technologies.

ThunderHawk enables wireless carriers and service providers to differentiate themselves by providing a more satisfying Web browsing experience to their customers. This opens up new revenue opportunities. In addition, corporations can also take advantage of ThunderHawk to achieve significant cost savings. They won't have to deploy WAP or design XSL solutions for their mobile Intranet and Internet users who need to access corporate data from handheld devices.

Bitstream also offers the ThunderHawk Graphics Layer (TGL), a Software Development Kit (SDK). TGL allows any display-limited device -- from portable GPS navigation systems to cell phones to Palm browsers -- to effectively double the perceived resolution of the color LCD display.

HP Jornada PDAs provide the freedom to enhance productivity and personal creativity. Users can access critical business information; browse the Internet; check e-mail; communicate with other PDAs, PCs and printers; and capture, share and edit digital images while on the go(1).

Recently released, the HP Jornada 565 and 568 PDAs are the first PDAs to feature the robust Microsoft(R) Pocket PC 2002 Premium Edition software. Featuring a built-in CompactFlash Type 1 extended slot, these HP Jornada PDAs allow users to add memory cards and optional accessories such as wireless network solutions and the HP Pocket Camera. Providing increased versatility for the professional on the go, these latest HP Jornada PDAs feature a vibrant, 16-bit front-lit TFT reflective color screen for excellent indoor and outdoor viewing and an Intel(R) StrongARM 206 MHz high-performance processor for quick access to information.

"The HP Jornada is one of the slickest PDAs to come to market. Well designed, it has a large, clear color screen and wireless expansion capabilities, making it the perfect device for mobile applications -- including ThunderHawk, the future of easier, mobile Web browsing," said Anna Chagnon, President of Bitstream. "We are especially pleased that HP is the first handheld manufacturer to endorse this technology, which allows anyone with a Jornada and modem to view and access normal Web content."

"HP understands the growing need for mobility and is committed to teaming with companies such as Bitstream to provide users with practical, mobile solutions," said Pendy Pendyala, General Manager, HP Wireless and Internet Services Division. "HP is proud to offer Bitstream's ThunderHawk to our HP Jornada PDA customers."
