DiGi Expands SMS Capacity to Handle Phenomenal Traffic Growth; CMG Facilitates Exponential SMS Growth in Malaysia

December 21, 2001

Today CMG Wireless Data Solutions announced that DiGi has upgraded its Short Message Service Center (SMSC) in order to cope with the phenomenal SMS traffic growth in Malaysia. DiGi, a subsidiary of Telenor in Norway, recorded 600% traffic growth in the past 10 months. In January 2001 an average of 300,000 messages per day were sent, last count it was to 2 million messages per day in October this year. In Asia operators like Globe Telecom, MobileOne and Telkomsel use CMG's SMSC. The CMG messaging solution is used by 7 out of the 10 largest operators, such as Vodafone D2, Telefonica, France Telecom and T-Mobil.

Malaysia, following hot on the heels of The Philippines - who boasts the highest number of messages in the world - is set to break its own records. CMG is helping grow the messaging market in Malaysia by equipping the leading operators with exactly the right messaging solution to exploit the texting explosion.

"It was vital for us to deploy a messaging solution with uncompromised quality after witnessing just how quickly SMS usage is increasing in the country, and the region. A complete and comprehensive messaging solution is required to meet the ever-growing nature of SMS traffic. CMG's messaging solution allows us to maximize our SMS business now as well as prepare us for the onset of GPRS and 3G," said Knut Opegaard, Head of Marketing & Strategy DiGi Telecommunications Sdn Bhd. In light of the exploding SMS market in Malaysia, DiGi further adds that it is... "Ready to take up the challenge!".

"We are thrilled with DiGi's decision to further expand its messaging infrastructure in such an exciting market place. The upgrade will enable DiGi to further boost its SMS traffic and open up the messaging floodgates. CMG and DiGi have worked together since 1997. DiGi was the first operator to launch prepaid in Malaysia and till today remains the market leader in this segment. We are confident our messaging solutions, including our Multimedia Message Service Center, will allow DiGi to bring even more compelling (multimedia) messaging services to the Malaysian market," reports Boudewijn Pesch, Managing Director Asia Pacific, CMG Wireless Data Solutions.

The Asia Pacific region is very well positioned to continue the SMS success that started in Europe. "We've only just seen the tip of the iceberg" comments Boudewijn Pesch. "Our customers in Malaysia, have proven just how successful and profitable operators can be in the messaging arena when equipped with the right tools."

CMG's SMSC

CMG's Short Message Service Center (SMSC) is the only true performing central store and forward facility that accepts, buffers, processes and distributes up to 2,500 short messages per second in a mobile network. CMG Wireless Data Solutions was the first vendor in the world to deliver a High Performance Short Message Service Center, a single platform far exceeding industry performances. CMG now offers SMSC solutions for every operator who is serious about growing their messaging traffic, no matter what size.

The success of CMG's SMSC (and the success of CMG's customers running profitable SMS businesses) stems from it's unrivaled speed, capacity and stability under real network conditions whilst maintaining full store and forward capabilities.
