East West Motor Freight Selects Aether MobileMax2 for Wireless Communications and Tracking Services

Truckload Carrier to Implement Mobile Messaging Services Across Fleet

December 7, 2001

Aether Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq:AETH), a leading provider of wireless data products and services, today announced that East West Motor Freight, Inc., a truckload motor carrier based in Selmer, TN, has selected Aether MobileMax2,(TM) Aether's wireless communications system, for its fleet of trucks.

By enabling seamless mobile communication between drivers and dispatchers, the Aether MobileMax2 system will help East West Motor Freight to improve the overall productivity and efficiency of its fleet, increase driver performance and enhance the quality of its customer service.

East West Motor Freight, which specializes in hauling temperature-controlled commodities and dry freight across the United States, plans to complete the installation of the MobileMax2 system across its fleet by the end of the year.

Aether MobileMax2 utilizes a dual-mode modem that automatically switches between terrestrial (land-based) and satellite communication pathways without driver or dispatcher intervention to ensure complete coverage and cost-efficient communications.

The MobileMax2 data terminal transmits data messages and GPS position reports over both satellite and terrestrial communication pathways and provides data on vehicle fault codes and driver performance.

This information allows companies to evaluate individual driver and vehicle performance, notify operations when a vehicle engine exceeds specified parameters, and calculate the distance vehicles travel in each state. East West Motor Freight will use this data to develop cost-saving techniques such as managing drivers' idle time, reducing out-of-route miles and minimizing fleet maintenance costs.

"Our fleet travels across the United States, so its essential that we receive complete coverage in the most cost-effective manner," said Robert Chambers, President, East West Motor Freight. "MobileMax2 will serve to enhance our operational efficiency - an important factor in these times of economic distress and increased competitiveness."

"We're very pleased that East West Motor Freight has chosen MobileMax2 for its mobile messaging solution," said Bill Hannon, vice president for Aether's Transportation and Logistics Division. "Aether is dedicated to becoming the wireless partner of choice for a wide range of carriers across the trucking industry."
