ewd Announces First Single-Chip Wireless LAN Processor to Support All Three Major IEEE Wireless Networking Protocols ... 802.11a, 802.11b and 802.11g

December 4, 2001

embedded wireless devices inc (ewd(R)) announced today their e8025G(TM) single-chip multi-protocol dual-band Wireless LAN Processor supporting all three of the major IEEE wireless protocols: 802.11b; 802.11a and the recently approved 802.11g. With the WLAN arena getting further complicated by newly approved protocols and modulation schemes, manufacturers no longer need to second-guess market directions and dynamics to plan their hardware platforms. As an extension to ewd's e8025 Wireless Networking Processor Family, the e8025G Processor enables OEMs to design one hardware platform serving US, European and Asian markets with residential and enterprise client-based wireless networking products such as Network Interface Cards (NICs), PC networks and Information Appliances (IAs).

"ewd specializes in rapid design deployment of PoC(TM) (Product-on-Chip) solutions for NIC, access point and gateway technologies," said Michael S. Friis, ewd's chief technology officer. "Our versatile ewdC20(TM) Core, multiple programmable basebands and design flexibility allow us to rapidly develop the right products to serve the increasing requirements of the wireless networking market," he added.

A major benefit of ewd's e8000 Family of wireless processors is their programmability. The multiple configurable basebands enable OEMs to program virtually any combination of wireless networking protocols to improve functionality, lower cost and shorten time to market. The e8025G Processor contains all the functionality typically found in multi-chip PHY and MAC layer solutions: DSP/CPU; basebands; PCI and CardBus interfaces; DSP RAM; SRAM; eMOS(TM) Operating System and APIs. Through the multiple programmable basebands on the e8025G Processor, OEMs can readily implement three of the most popular and promising IEEE standard protocols with a simple software configuration. This enables a single hardware design to service worldwide requirements for wireless networking, offering users with the ability to travel between office, public area and home networks without changing interface cards. The appropriate RF solution is all that is required for a complete system. ewd has initiated the RFPartners Program to ensure a total system solution. RF Partner activity is already underway. "The addition of the e8025G Processor to our product line is a logical extension of our wireless networking chipsets," said Sean T. Marzola, president & CEO of ewd. "The programmability of our multiple baseband technology is perfectly suited for today's environment of rapidly evolving protocol standards. The single hardware platform with software configurations has worked very well for many of our customers," he added.

Price and Availability

The e8025G Processor, available in 1Q2002, is priced at $20/1,000 pieces.
