LawyersLearn.com First to Offer Continuing Legal Education to Lawyers On Handheld Devices

December 4, 2001

LawyersLearn.com, the leader in interactive continuing legal education, announces CLE2Go(TM), a patent-pending system that allows lawyers to earn Continuing Legal Education (CLE) credits using their Palm Powered(TM) or Pocket PC handheld devices, making CLE more convenient and cost effective for users.

In nearly every state, lawyers are required to earn roughly 10-15 hours of CLE credits annually. Historically, CLE courses are offered off-site, often involving significant travel time, and during key income-producing hours. Since their income is based on the number of hours they bill, obtaining CLE credits in the traditional way can be very costly for attorneys.

For the first time, beginning regionally in December and nationwide in January, attorneys can access high quality interactive CLE wherever and whenever it is most convenient for them; at home, while waiting for their case to be called at the courthouse, or even on vacation. Because of this patented technology, lawyers don't have to cut into peak billable hours to earn CLE or even rely on access to a desktop or laptop computer.

Attorneys can truly maximize the use of their Palm(TM) handhelds with the efficiency and time-savings provided by this exciting solution," said Steve Yu, vice president and general counsel, Palm, Inc. "We're happy to see such an innovative application for the Palm OS(R) platform."

LawyersLearn.com has developed and patented technology that for the first time makes its entire catalogue of interactive courses available on handheld devices. Using CLE2Go(TM), attorneys will have immediate access to 20 courses, including ethics and mediation, developed by some of the nation's top legal professionals and educators. In the near future, hundreds of CLE topics will be available on CLE2Go(TM).

"LawyersLearn.com has been a major part of our CLE program for several years now, providing top quality interactive courses online," said Charles J. Gearhiser, President of the Tennessee Bar Association. "Being able to take CLE on their handhelds will be incredibly beneficial to lawyers, and it really gives people in the legal profession another incentive to buy and use these devices. I know our members will be excited."

How it works:

To take a course on a handheld device, an attorney simply registers through his or her participating bar association's online "university" and chooses the CLE2Go(TM) option. The instructions and coursework are then downloaded, either wirelessly or via the HotSync(R) function, to the handheld device for use anywhere, anytime. LawyersLearn.com handles all of the details, such as registration, post testing, forwarding of credits to the appropriate bar association, etc.

"We know from experience that time is critical to lawyers," LawyersLearn.com President Lee Riggs said. "And this product lets them earn CLE credit when and where they want to, without having to travel to a seminar and without sacrificing peak billable hours. We expect CLE2Go(TM) to be very useful and popular."
