Pumatech Awarded Another U.S. Patent for Synchronization Software

December 14, 2001

Company's 17th Overall Patent Pertains To The Unique Form Of "Medium Sync" Used To Enable Synchronization With Microsoft Outlook And Microsoft Exchange

Pumatech, Inc. (NASDAQ: PUMA), a leading provider of enterprise-level software products and services that deliver highly relevant information wherever and whenever it's needed, today announced it has received its 11th U.S. patent relating to various aspects of its intelligent synchronization technology, increasing the company's patent portfolio to a total of 17 U.S. patents. The new patent (U.S. Patent No. 6,330,568) applies to Pumatech's unique form of "medium sync," a technology that enables synchronization of e-mail, calendar, contacts and notes between handheld devices and Microsoft Outlook and Exchange databases. The Company filed for the patent on Nov. 5, 1997.

The award of Pumatech's 17th overall patent further validates the Company's position as a market leader in intelligent synchronization solutions for the enterprise, and strengthens its already extensive portfolio of intellectual property. Utilized by all of Pumatech's Intellisync(R) synchronization products, the new patent pertains to Pumatech's "medium sync" technology, the proven and efficient way by which Pumatech enables synchronization between Palm OS(R), Pocket PC and Symbian handheld devices and popular corporate applications such as Microsoft Outlook and Exchange. Pumatech's "medium sync" technology allows the Company to overcome many of the challenges of utilizing alternative "fast sync" and "slow sync" methods. Unlike "fast sync," Pumatech's "medium sync" is able to obtain sync information from applications that do not track deleted records, or where tracking of all changes needed for fast sync may be unreliable. "Medium sync" accomplishes this by enabling the sync Connector to query applications for two types of input: full record data for all newly added or changed records, or just the unique ID for all records that are unchanged. This is a much more efficient technique than "slow sync," where the Connector queries applications to obtain one type of input by accessing the full record data for all records added, changed or not modified since the last synchronization was performed. Pumatech's "medium sync" technology provides the Company with a unique competitive advantage by enabling its Intellisync solutions to synchronize with applications that are incompatible with "fast sync," without the reduction in performance that results from "slow sync."

"Our combined 8 years of research and development of intelligent and efficient synchronization solutions is one of our greatest advantages over the competition," said Brad Rowe, president and CEO of Pumatech. "The award of our 17th patent solidifies our position as a market leader in synchronization technology, and further enables us to provide Global 2000 companies with effective real-time solutions that improve productivity by enabling access to critical business information."

In addition to its 11 patents pertaining to synchronization, Pumatech holds one patent relating to a user interface for file-transfer technology and five patents relating to its Mind-it(R) Web-based change-detection and notification technology. Pumatech also owns nine pending U.S. patents, as well as rights to enforce five patents owned by Intel Corporation, under a cross-license agreement between Pumatech and Intel.
