Radiolinja completes successful E-OTD field trials of Nokia mPosition solution for location services in Finland

December 21, 2001

Nokia and Radiolinja, the Finnish mobile operator, have demonstrated good results in field trials using Nokia's enhanced observed time difference (E?OTD) positioning technology in Radiolinja's GSM900/1800 network - a breakthrough for E?OTD technology. The trials demonstrated positioning accuracy typically between 50 meters and 100 meters, meaning the system was able to pinpoint a mobile phone's true location within that range.

The field trials were carried out in a combined urban and suburban area in Espoo, Finland. Most tests were carried out in a moving vehicle.

"The trialling that we have conducted with Nokia is helping to bring advanced positioning technology out of the lab into the real world," says Kirsi Valtari, Vice President for Technology, Radiolinja. "As an operator, we want to be shown that this new technology is workable in real-life environments and conditions. Positioning with the accuracy we have achieved will provide an excellent basis for service deployment."

"We have demonstrated our E?OTD solution through various trials," says Heikki Hämmäinen, General Manager, Location Business Program, Nokia Networks. "With these customer test results in a real 2G environment, we have shown E?OTD technology's capability. Indications show that we can be confident of meeting the accuracy requirements of commercial services and emergency calls."

Location-relevant services are one of the key elements in the Mobile Internet. E?OTD is one of the advanced technologies that can be employed to determine the physical location of a mobile subscriber, thus enabling location-relevant services. Deployment of E-OTD positioning can be made with minimum additional network investment because the solution is fully integrated into GSM network architecture. There is virtually no cost burden for terminals, either. Nokia will support E-OTD in its terminals starting in the first half of 2002.

Nokia is a leader in positioning technologies. The location methods used by Nokia mPosition allow operators early access to specific markets with a Cell ID-based solution as well as with more accurate neighboring cell measurement solutions. The methods provide an investment-secured evolutionary path to E?OTD and A-GPS (assisted global positioning system) covering GSM, 3G (WCDMA/EDGE) and ALL-IP RAN networks.
