Rococo Software Unveils Bluetooth Simulator and World's First Standards-Based Java Tool for Developing Bluetooth Applications

December 13, 2001

Rococo Software, builder of short-range wireless application development tools, announces today's launch of the beta program for its Bluetooth simulator and the world's first standards-based Java tool for developing Bluetooth applications.

Impronto Simulator runs Java applications in a simulated Bluetooth environment, allowing developers to simply test and configure applications before deploying them on Bluetooth devices. By using Impronto Simulator, developers can test Bluetooth applications without investing in costly hardware and Bluetooth stacks. The simulator is 100% Java and supports standard Java APIs for Bluetooth technology.

"Impronto Simulator is stable, light-weight, easy to configure and allows real work to start immediately without all the fuss of setting-up the hardware," said Patrick Connolly, Rococo's Chief Architect, who used Impronto Simulator while developing in-house Bluetooth applications. "Even battle-hardened Bluetooth engineers appreciate the Simulator's simplicity when it comes to rapid application development."

Impronto Developer Kit (DK), is a standards-based Java tool designed to make building Bluetooth applications easy by hiding complex Bluetooth protocols behind standard Java APIs. A wireless application written with Impronto will run on any standard Bluetooth Java platform without making changes to the code. Impronto DK works in J2ME and Java 2 Standard Edition (J2SE) and includes a common interface to underlying Bluetooth stack technology. Impronto DK runs on Red Hat Linux and PalmOS and will be delivered for IPAQ later this year.

"Impronto DK extends the core premise of Java--write once, run anywhere," said CTO and Rococo co-founder, Karl McCabe. "Now, developers can quickly build truly portable Java applications while making full use of Bluetooth technology." According to McCabe, Impronto DK lets developers focus on building applications rather than worrying about Bluetooth specifications.

Pricing and Availability

Impronto Simulator and Impronto DK are available as part of a beta program. For more information, email beta@rococosoft.com.

Pricing will be announced when the products are available for sale in March, 2002. However, it is expected that the cost of Impronto Simulator and Impronto DK (bundled together) will be under US$3000.
