Verizon Wireless and TCS Deliver Advanced Messaging Portal

December 7, 2001

TeleCommunication Systems, Inc. (TCS) (Nasdaq:TSYS), a key architect of wireless messaging and location technology, announced that Verizon Wireless, the nation's largest wireless carrier, has deployed the TCS Wireless Internet Gateway(TM) technology to unleash new, advanced messaging services to its digital customers for the recently launched www.vtext.com short messaging service Web site -- a new, custom-designed Web interface for Verizon Wireless Mobile Messenger(SM) services.

Verizon Wireless' innovative vtext.com companion Web site allows users to send messages directly to Verizon Wireless customers with confirmed delivery through a Web page. In addition, Verizon Wireless' two-way text messaging phones can easily reply to the online message-sender via an innovative reply capability built into vtext.com. Additional value-added messaging services at vtext.com provide users with the ability to send group messages, schedule information alerts, send reminder notes, and block unwanted messages.

"With TCS' support we've introduced the most innovative and consumer-ready short text messaging service in the United States," said Richard Vile, Director, Messaging for Verizon Wireless. "We contracted with TCS on this complex initiative because of their expertise in messaging and their knowledge of our messaging infrastructure."

"With the enhanced features we've developed to deliver short messages and alerts, we can support text messaging services like Verizon Wireless' vtext.com Web site," said Maurice B. Tose, president, chairman and CEO of TCS. "Our collective work is one of the most innovative text messaging services available in the United States and demonstrates the growth opportunity of consumer and enterprise applications based on this prevalent and popular form of wireless data."
