U.S. Fleet Services Refuels America's Commercial Fleets Using Intermec 710 Mobile Computer

December 19, 2001

U.S. Fleet Services, based in Horsham, Penn., has selected Intermec(R) 710 mobile computers and 782 portable printers to automate the company's nationwide fleet of fuel delivery trucks.

U.S. Fleet Services, founded in 1997, has grown to become the largest provider of fleet fuel outsourcing in the United States, with customers such as FedEx, Coca-Cola, Home Depot and more. U.S. Fleet Services refuels a company's vehicle fleet during the customer's off-hours. The reduction in fleet downtime translates into significant cost savings, improved driver productivity, elimination of environmental liabilities, reduced administrative costs and more.

By adapting Intermec's mobile computing and barcoding systems, U.S. Fleet Services is able to further extend its record-keeping capabilities at the driver level. Drivers scan a barcode on the outside of a customer's truck, using a laser scanner built into the Intermec 710 mobile computer. The driver then uses the device's integrated 802.11b radio to communicate wirelessly with the company's own truck's electronic fuel meter, specifying the exact type and quantity of fuel, to the tenth of a gallon, consumed by the vehicle.

"The Intermec 710 is by far the best device we evaluated," said Saul Cohen, vice president of U.S. Fleet's IT operations. "It combines all the right features in a ruggedized shell with an excellent form factor. Finding one device that includes Microsoft(R) Pocket PC, Embedded Visual Basic 3.0, SQL Server 2000 CE Edition, integrated wireless radio, CompactFlash card and laser barcode scanner, along with a touch screen and numeric keypad makes the 710 the ideal solution for our drivers in a harsh environment."

The system lets U.S. Fleet Services provide detailed fuel management reports to its customers every 24 hours via a secure FleetTrack(TM) extranet site and improve delivery service with greater accuracy than a paper-based, manual system.

After fueling a customer's entire fleet of vehicles, drivers are able to provide a receipt using the Intermec 782 workboard printer.

The Intermec(R) 710 mobile computer is a highly rugged, radio-enabled handheld device built to withstand the harsh elements U.S. Fleet Service drivers endure. The drop resistant case is sealed against rain, yet weighs less than 16 ounces. Designed to hold the Intermec 710 mobile computer, the 782 workboard printer can print both standard and barcoded receipts plus graphics and signatures.
