Vodafone Group R&D (Vodafone) Germany and Softwired AG (Softwired) Switzerland have announced an agreement to work together on a "Rapid Prototyping Environment" for Java based services.
Designed to meet the business needs of rich application development, this platform will be Multimedia capable as well as the Reference Architecture for all Java based applications.
Developed in collaboration with Vodafone, Softwired and ATG, (who provide leading edge scenario and profiling features), the architecture has all the key features necessary for developing and deploying revenue-generating applications for Java-enabled mobile devices including PDAs, Communicators and emerging Smartphones such as the Siemens SL 45i and Motorola Accompli 008. Softwired, the leading provider of End-to-End(TM) Java messaging middleware (JMS), is the sole provider of reliable Java messaging software for this platform.
Elmar Weber of Vodafone: "We were looking for a solution for both our back-end integration using a standards based middleware as well as an extension of the same middleware for mobile devices, then we came across Softwired. From the first meeting it was clear Softwired had a great solution for us which was already available and working."
He added: "Due to Softwired's iBus//Mobile and iBus//MessageServer products we have been able to construct a solid mobile applications platform in record time, a platform which meets our requirements for the rapid development of rich applications based on advanced packet switched networks (GPRS, UMTS, etc.) and Java enabled devices."
Dr. Silvano Maffeis, CTO at Softwired: "The requirements for the Vodafone project have confirmed the direction we have taken with our iBus//Mobile wireless middleware product, including a small footprint, store and forward communication on the device, the ability to handle multiple wireless networks, and compliance with Sun's J2ME, J2EE, and JMS standards."
