TCS Upgrades Its Message Distribution Center

New Features Include Delivery Receipts, European SMS and Pager Messaging Delivery

January 11, 2002

TeleCommunication Systems, Inc. (TCS) (Nasdaq:TSYS), a key architect of wireless messaging and location technology, today announced that it has completed the upgrade of its Message Distribution Center (MDC).

The MDC enables text-messaging providers to send messages to wireless devices by simply entering the recipient's phone number.

The upgrades enhance the benefits of sending alerts and notifications through the MDC. Message providers have an expanded set of message customization options and greater control over their messaging applications. The delivery and expiration features will assist messaging providers in ensuring that their subscribers receive the information they request. In addition, the MDC provides customers an opportunity to extend their market reach, as it delivers messages into both North America and Europe.

"TCS developed these new features in anticipation of a carrier's need for inter-carrier messaging," said Maurice B. Tose, chairman, president and CEO of TCS. "As well, the additions of delivery notification and message expiration improve the reliability of SMS, making it a more attractive means of mobile communications for enterprises."

There are multiple benefits of 2-way messaging. For enterprise applications, message providers simply embed a voice or text reply number in the message. Thus, message recipients can easily and efficiently reply to information requests by using simple voice or text reply. Mobile commerce applications provide simple one-step ordering and enhanced customer service by leveraging the embedded 2-way functionality. Users will appreciate the simple communication with customer service personnel. The benefits of offering 2-way messaging capabilities are clear -- subscribers need only know the phone number of the destination device. Regardless of interface or carrier network, subscribers enjoy simple text messaging.

The MDC serves as a central point between carrier networks, leveraging TCS' Wireless Internet Gateway(TM) technology to enable messages to flow seamlessly between networks. The MDC acts as an inter-carrier messaging hub and clearinghouse for message providers across wireless networks Worldwide. Developers interested in learning more about the Message Distribution Center are encouraged to join our MDC Developers Program at http://developer.tcsmdc.com.
