MOTOROLA UNVEILS FIRST 'INTERNET-READY' INTEGRATED DIGITAL WIRELESS HANDSET

Palm-size iDEN Handset Combines Microbrowser and Wireless Modem Functionality

NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana (February 8, 1999) ¾ Motorola today demonstrates the i1000plus™ the first palm-size iDEN® handset to support wireless access to the Internet, corporate intranets and networks and enhanced phone features, at CTIA Wireless '99 in New Orleans. Designed for business users who rely on voice communication and convenient access to information over networks, the i1000plus handset is the first Internet-ready wireless device to integrate the capabilities of a digital phone, two-way radio and alphanumeric pager with Internet microbrowser, e-mail, fax and two-way messaging capabilities using Motorola's advanced iDEN integrated digital communication technology. A first in the industry, the IP (Internet Protocol) addressable i1000plus handset will enable a user to browse Internet, intranet and extranet Web sites using Unwired Planet™ microbrowser technology. The new handset can also serve as a wireless modem when connected to a notebook computer or PDA (personal digital assistant).

"Because Motorola's i1000plus handset supports mobile IP, it enables wireless access to a wealth of information on the Internet, and allows a user to send and receive messages from individuals around the world," said Sam Desai, senior vice president and general manager of Motorola's iDEN Subscriber Group.

i1000plus Mobile Capabilities and Applications Motorola has licensed Unwired Planet's UP.Browser,™ the high-performance WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) microbrowser and messaging engine that is designed and optimized for wireless handset devices. UP.Browser facilitates interaction between the user and server-based applications, empowering subscribers with access to an endless variety of Internet and corporate intranet applications and information services, including synchronization with desktop Internet e-mail. Combined with the phone's existing user interface software, UP.Browser gives wireless network operators a new way to reach subscribers and add innovative services, with seamless integration of voice and data features.

With UP.Browser, the i1000plus handset will have complete untethered microbrowser capabilities, delivered directly to the phone's LCD screen, allowing users to easily and transparently access information stored on public Internet and corporate intranet Web servers and database systems. Users can send and receive e-mail wirelessly through a separate UP.Link™ address or synchronize wireless Internet e-mail directly with their desktop Internet e-mail. The i1000plus will also allow users to wirelessly send and receive fax and e-mail messages when connected to popular PDAs, such as 3Com's PalmPilot and Windows CE devices.

With UP.Browser capabilities in the i1000plus handset, users can benefit from applications such as e-mail, scheduling calendars, stock quotes and phone number look-up. An i1000plus user will be able to easily type messages on their handset using T9 Text input, licensed from Tegic Communications, which allows text entry with just one key press per letter.

With a cabled connection to a notebook computer, an i1000plus user can access an enterprise network without the cost and inconvenience of a separate modem. In addition, using standard interface connections, these capabilities will allow iDEN users to send and receive faxes. Using an iDEN packet data connection, a user can access corporate e-mail, perform file transfers, and access Internet and intranet sites using a Web browser.

i1000plus Form Factor Supporting the same form factor as the standard i1000 handset, the i1000plus handset measures just 4.5 x 2.2 x 1.2 inches (115 x 56 x 30 mm) and weighs as little as 5 ounces (142 grams) with the ultra slim Lithium Ion battery. Up to 180 minutes of talk time or up to 60 hours of standby time can be achieved with the standard Lithium Ion battery.

The i1000plus, with its full-graphic LCD display, allows the user to select the font size in the browser and mail mode and has new display icons. With its built-in speakerphone and clamshell design with external soft keys, an i1000plus handset can be used whether the unit is open or closed.

i1000plus Features and Accessories To further improve the convenience and efficiency of use, the i1000plus handset offers a variety of improved features, including:

Turbo Dial™ for one-button telephone dialing. --Quick store™ to easily add a number into the user directory. Recall last 10 phone numbers to access recently dialed or incoming numbers.* Missed call indicator for immediate notification of an unanswered call. Selectable font size to adjust the amount of e-mail and microbrowser text displayed.

In addition to advanced data capabilities and enhanced phone features, the i1000plus supports all of the i1000 features, such as: speakerphone, VibraCall® silent alert, Caller ID, time of day and date display, multi-language operation and alternate phone line.

To compliment the full line of accessories already available for use with the i1000, additional accessories will be sold through iDEN authorized dealers specifically for the i1000plus. For example, data cables will be available to allow hook-up to a PC or a PDA.

iDEN systems are operational in Argentina, Brazil, Canada, China, Colombia, Israel, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Peru, the Philippines, Singapore and the United States.
