MONTROUGE, Paris, February 12, 1999 -- Schlumberger extends the range and sophistication of applications that can co-reside on the same card by adding a higher capacity memory Java SIM card to its award-winning family of Cyberflex Simera cards. This new smart card, called Cyberflex Simera 32, is the only Java SIM card to feature a 32k memory size and triples the available space reserved for applications. Typical applications can include advanced mobile banking and e-commerce services, e-mail and database access tools, loyalty programmes and interactive games from the nascent area of mobile leisure industry.
Cyberflex Simera 32 is the latest Java SIM card addition to the Schlumberger Cyberflex Mobile Solution. Through a combination of Java SIM cards and back-office technology, Cyberflex Mobile Solution allows the existing mobile phone infrastructure to be used to deploy smart services with the highest levels of security and at very low cost. It represents a major breakthrough in one-to-one marketing. These facilities empower operators to differentiate themselves from competitors by creating unique service offerings, and by providing subscribers with individually tailored service packages.

Cyberflex Simera 32 offers a dynamic platform that is intrinsically capable of running multiple applications, and allows services to be easily added, updated or removed at any time. Importantly, thanks to Java's intrinsic fire-walling capability, application programs reside within the SIM card in complete isolation from other mobile services making it an ideal platform for secure applications such as mobile banking and e-commerce.
Like a standard SIM card, Cyberflex Simera 32 performs the subscriber identity function which is intrinsic to GSM-compatible phones and terminals, allowing operators to implement systems straight away. It is also compatible with the pro-active commands of the latest Phase2+ SIM Application Toolkit, allowing the computing power of the chip to be used independently to run sophisticated application programs which interact with the mobile terminal's components as required.
Full compatibility with the new JavaCard API version 2 - and the card's massive 32k memory - brings enormous flexibility to this environment, replacing the traditional proprietary approach to programming SIM cards with a platform that can be customised by programmers from the mainstream computer skills marketplace using commercially available Java development tools. The development freedom offered by Cyberflex Simera 32 reduces the time and costs needed to bring new services to market, and allows any organisation to write applications independently of the network operator. This is expected to result in a rapid expansion of services for wireless communication network, allowing operators to target new and smaller market segments, and allowing subscribers to create their own unique service packages.
Schlumberger provides a powerful suite of tools to support Cyberflex Simera 32. SIMnario, a graphical Windows tool, speeds up the design and real time prototyping of SIM Toolkit applications. For application developers, the Cyberflex Simera Development Kit includes a card reader, sample cards and software tools to manage and load applications onto the Cyberflex Simera 32 card as well as a simulator which allows Java applications to be checked without loading them onto a card.
