Nokia unveils the world's first media phone for Internet access

The Nokia 7110 dual band GSM 900/1800 media phone brings Internet content and other services to every pocket

(February 23, 1999) - Nokia has today announced the world's first media phone that is based on the Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) in Mobile Media Mode (WWW:MMM). The Nokia 7110 dual band GSM 900/1800 media phone was introduced at the GSM World Congress in Cannes, France. The new product has been designed to enable easy access to Internet content from a mobile phone. The Nokia 7110 has a large graphics display and a number of new and innovative features for ease of operation and text input. The product will be available in volume in the second quarter of 1999. Nokia will also introduce similar products for the TDMA and GSM 1900 standards later this year.

The Nokia 7110 media phone is an optimal platform for advanced access to Value Added Services and the content available on the Internet. The emphasis in today's personal communications is shifting from listening to viewing, and hence the demand for services other than voice is growing rapidly. The handsets must meet the growing requirements in terms of good viewing of information, easy text input, and fast and smart access to information without sacrificing weight, size and performance.

The display of the Nokia 7110 is almost 80 percent larger than in the Nokia 6110, yet the overall dimensions of the Nokia 7110 are smaller. The features of the new Nokia phone again exceed anything that has been seen in the industry before. The predictive text input method and the Nokia NaviRoller guarantee that the Nokia 7110 is easy to use, in spite of its extensive set of features," said Anssi Vanjoki, Senior Vice President, Nokia Mobile Phones, Europe and Africa.

The Nokia 7110 can access text information that is made available on the Internet. This can mean news, weather reports, stock prices, e-mail, flight schedules or wireless banking and electronic commerce. Many of these services are already today provided by the leading operators, and the Nokia 7110 will greatly enhance the use of them. In order to demonstrate some of the real benefits of the Value Added Services, Nokia and CNN have today announced the CNN Mobile, a wireless news service that can be conveniently accessed with the Nokia 7110.

Mobile Media Mode (WWW:MMM) brings Internet services to mobile environment based on the Wireless Application Protocol (WAP). The Nokia 7110 supports WAP, which is a global de-facto standard for providing information content to wireless terminals. The WAP specification version 1.0. was announced in early 1998. Nokia is a co-founding member of WAP.

The features exceed anything that has been seen in the industry

Since the Nokia 7110 has been specially designed for Value Added Services, a lot of effort has been put into optimizing the phone for reading and entering text information. The large display allows for viewing different font sizes, bold or regular text format, and graphics. Entering text has been greatly enhanced by the predictive text input method. The Nokia 7110 has a built-in dictionary, which assists in quickly picking up the right word. In addition to the standard vocabulary, the Nokia 7110 can also continuously learn new words from the user. The predictive text input method is considerably faster than the ordinary way of entering text.

The Nokia 7110 is the first Nokia phone to enable Chinese input from the phone keypad. The user can use either Pinyin, Zhuyin or 5-stroke input when writing names, addresses, short messages or calendar notes. The Chinese version of the Nokia 7110 has over 9000 Chinese words in its vocabulary. Built with an intuitive intelligence that simplifies the input process, the software presents a choice of the most likely finished characters that the user can instantly select.

The Nokia NaviRoller is another new innovation for quicker access to all functions of the phone. The user can scroll the menus and the phonebook functions using the Nokia NaviRoller. The selection in the menu is then made by clicking the Nokia NaviRoller. The roller can also be used for text input.

The memory of the Nokia 7110 can store up to 1000 names in the phonebook, with up to five phone or fax numbers and two addresses for each contact. Different icons can be used for marking the home or office phone, fax number or email address. This storage capacity is much more than in ordinary mobile phones and allows the user to keep all key contact information in one place. Up to 500 short messages can be stored on the phone. The messages can be filed in the user-defined folders. The calendar of the Nokia 7110 can be viewed either by day, week or month, and up to 660 calendar notes can be stored. The calendar can also easily be synchronized with the most common PC calendars.

Apart from its outstanding features, the Nokia 7110 is also smaller in size than, for example, the Nokia 6110. It weighs only 141 grams with the standard battery, which under optimal circumstances can give it a standby time of up to 260 hours and a talk-time of up to 4 hours 30 minutes. The Nokia 7110 has a slide cover and a curved shape resembling the design of the famous Nokia 8110. The call is activated and terminated by opening and closing the cover. The cover can also be instantly opened by pressing the trigger on the back of the phone, which snaps the slide open. The vibrating alarm is a built-in feature.

The Nokia 7110 supports 34 languages and has 35 ringing tones. The accessories are compatible with the Nokia 5100 and Nokia 6100 series. The Nokia 7110 supports all three wireless voice codecs: Half Rate, Full Rate and Enhanced Full Rate. Nokia developed EFR together with the University of Sherbrooke and drove for its adaptation as the industry standard.
