HP's VeriFone Announces Solution with De La Rue to Enable Delivery of New Mobile E-Commerce Capabilities to GSM Market

VeriSmart GSM Solution to Create Secure, Standards-Based Solution to Help Service Providers Deliver Multiple New Services to Existing and Future GSM Phones

CANNES, France. - February 23, 1999 - Allowing mobile service providers to capitalize on the 300% growth rate in data services, Hewlett-Packard Company and its VeriFone division have teamed up with De La Rue to provide a modular solution that will enable the development and secure delivery of expansive electronic commerce services to consumers' GSM phones. The VeriSmartTM GSM solution, intends to provide technology that starts by enabling easy-to-use, information services such as news, weather and stock quotes, and can evolve to adopt such services as mobile stored value loading, mobile purchasing and full mobile commerce over the Internet. The VeriSmart GSM solution combines capabilities from De La Rue's SIMphonIC Toolkit solution and VeriFone's VeriSmart GSM server with interfaces to Internet payment and payment processing software. The result is a secure offering based on Java Card 2.1 and evolving ETSI standards that will allow full interoperability between GSM applications, subscriber identification modules (SIMs) and handsets. This provides GSM operators with the ability to target the entire base of GSM cellular phone users for delivering existing and future mobile e-commerce applications. The solution will also feature VeriSmart's high level security architecture that has received approvals from card associations and financial institutions worldwide for e-commerce applications.

HP said it plans to implement the VeriSmart GSM solution to mobile operators around the world, and that it sees a tight integration between VeriSmart GSM and HP's existing customer-care and billing systems through HP's mobile partners that will allow consumers to conduct over-the-air provisioning of services and payment. HP also plans to deliver the solution as part of its broader strategy to deliver a wide range of open server-based solutions and services with its mobile partners to the entire wireless marketplace.

Christophe Dolique, business director, GSM, De La Rue Card Systems comments: "Many organizations are talking about mobile e-commerce solutions. The difference with De La Rue and HP's VeriFone is that we will be delivering a solution that is being used today by operators to deliver value added services to their customers."
