DE LA RUE AND SYMANTEC PARTNER TO INTRODUCE GSM STANDARD APPLICATION DEVELOPMENT AND SIMULATION TOOL

De La Rue Card Systems, one of the world's leading suppliers of smart cards, electronic transaction solutions and identity systems, today announces a partnership with Symantec, one of the world's leading providers of Java™ development tools, to offer a complete development and simulation tool for live GSM standard SIM Toolkit (STK) applications.

By integrating De La Rue's SIMphonIC™ Composer into Symantec Visual Café™, software developers are now able to gain instant access to SIM standard libraries to design, develop, debug and simulate GSM Java Card applications. In light of this, the SIMphonIC and Visual Café solution is considered the standard development and simulation tool for multi-partner GSM SIM cards.

This tool will facilitate the creation of Value Added Services allowing speedier development and a complete design of SIM Toolkit applications. Compliant to Java Card 2.1 API, SIM API standards and Open Platform 2.0 from Visa International, the application is loaded onto SIMphonIC V.2 VOP compliant cards to run on the GSM network and offer a new service under an umbrella of common industry operating standards.

The integration will give Java Card developers the ability to build SIM applications for telecommunications as easily as they build Java desktop applications today. They can now create, run and debug their SIM application without leaving the Visual Café environment. When creating a New Project from the File menu, developers simply choose a SIM application option, making GSM libraries options accessible via a step-by-step process.

Mansour Safai, Vice President of Symantec's Internet Tools Division comments, "The wave of anticipation in the market for cross-industry and cross-platform GSM applications is finally being met by this partnership. Developers have been looking for a standard development tool to capitalise on the convergence of the telecommunications sector and other sectors, such as finance. By bringing this solution to market, we are pleased to be able to meet their exacting requirements."

By integrating the entire mobile environment, SIMphonIC Composer provides an ideal platform for enhanced communications with third parties, such as banks and service/information providers, and also acts as an interactive facilitator in the joint specification, development and validation of applications.

Christophe Dolique, Business Director GSM, De La Rue Card Systems adds, "We see this partnership as the first step in bringing GSM application development to a wider audience. In giving developers a one-stop, comprehensive application modelling and design tool, the SIMphonIC/Visual Café solution will spearhead the introduction of new smart card applications across industry sectors."
