Ericsson brings new e-services over the Internet to the smart home and small office [March 18]

Ericsson is launching a new family of products that brings consumers a wider selection of services over the Internet. View the web via the TV screen, get on-line security for the home and control energy appliances from a mobile phone. The new Ericsson solution including e-box, e-manager and e-tools are demonstrated at CeBIT.

The Ericsson solution gives operators and service providers a rapid path to implement new services for Internet access, remote surveillance, security, energy control and health care, using one common platform and communications architecture, the Internet.

For a homeowner, this may mean an instant, always on-line connection to the Internet allowing simplified web browsing, via the TV or a simple "web phone". A security monitoring service where police, fire department or security firm acts upon alarms from the security system. The possibility to open doors by remote control in case of emergency. The means to control energy appliances in the home from a chosen terminal: phone or computer. All services handled by an e-box placed in the home, operated and maintained by a service provider.

"By combining wireline, wireless and Internet technologies, network operators and ISPs will bring consumers completely new services. With this specification, a new market is actually being shaped. Ericsson will deliver carrier class robust solutions to operators, taking the challenge of providing new e-services as well as connecting home networks to the Internet, building the smart home," says Torbjorn Nilsson, Executive Vice President, Marketing and Sales, Ericsson.

Network operators and service providers benefit from Ericsson’s e-services solution by allowing development a whole new range of services as well as increasing the number of services offered to subscribers. The solution also benefits consumers by lowering the cost of services, providing a broader choice of providers, and enabling entirely new ways of simplifying day-to-day life.

The Ericsson e-services solution contains all elements needed to create an e-services infrastructure:

The e-box service gateway is a combined ‘thin server’ and communications gateway. Through its open architecture the e-box connects to appliances in the home via different technologies such as Ethernet today, Bluetooth and others tomorrow. In the same way, the e-box leverages the value of existing wide area wireline and wireless networks while providing flexibility towards WCDMA, ADSL and other high speed access technologies. The e-box will comply with the resently announced Open Service Gateway Specification. The specification will be finalized later this year, and is supported by 15 leading IT and communications industry companies.

The robust carrier class e-manager Services and Operations Management system is based on Ericsson's proven technology and expertise in building telecom networks scaling to millions of subscribers.

The Java™ technology based e-tools development environment allows service providers, third party application programmers and appliance vendors to rapidly develop services and products for the e-service market.

The e-manager and the e-box service gateway, including support for a range of service applications, are already available. The e-tools development environment will be available in the second quarter this year.
