The new Nokia Artus USSD Center - fast response times for interactive messaging services

(March 18, 1999) - Nokia today announces the launch of the Nokia Artus USSD Center, a platform for faster interactive messaging services within GSM networks, as well as easy access to Internet-based services.

With this advanced messaging platform, response times for interactive applications are reduced compared to conventional Short Messaging Services in GSM networks - the USSD (Unstructured Supplementary Services Data) can operate at up to seven times faster than existing services. This is made possible as the radio connection remains open, removing the need for reserving the channel for each message. In addition, there are no delays for message storing and forwarding.

"The Nokia Artus USSD Center is complementary to existing SMS services, bringing smoother and faster interactive messaging to subscribers," says Pekka Salonoja, Vice President, Wireless Data Server Systems, Nokia Telecommunications. "With this new platform, Nokia can help operators lead the way in the provision of advanced wireless data services."

As part of the complete Nokia GSM system, the Nokia Artus USSD Center will first provide a connection to the Nokia DX200 Home Location Register (HLR). Nokia Artus USSD Center can be supplied with an interface for billing systems as well as the Nokia Network Management System.

With the Nokia Artus Messaging Platform connecting USSD to Internet services, subscribers have easy access to services including headline news, sports results, currency exchange rates and stock market quotes.

By supporting WAP (Wireless Application Protocol), the Nokia Artus USSD Center enables access to real-time information, including Internet content and other advanced telephony services on digital mobile phones and other wireless terminals.

Nokia is a founding member of the WAP Forum, which will standardise intelligent messaging for creating Internet services and applications for digital mobile phones and wireless terminals. Nokia offers a complete wireless data solution for telecommunications, offering operators the possibility to provide their customers with a range of value-added services.

Nokia is the world's leading mobile phone supplier and a leading supplier of mobile and fixed telecom networks including related customer services.
