(March 18, 1999) - Nokia has today introduced the Nokia WAP Server, which enables corporations, system integrators and software developers to offer Internet- or Intranet -based information and services to their customers, business partners and employees through a mobile phone.
The Nokia WAP Server is the open server platform for mobile applications and a gateway between the wireless network and the Internet or a company's internal network. It converts and optimises information to meet the characteristics of wireless transport and that of small terminals, such as mobile phones. It can retrieve content from origin servers such as Web servers and other corporate information systems and deliver it to any fully WAP-compliant terminal through wireless connections.
"The WAP Server provides corporations and IT-organizations an open platform to deliver new and legacy services and applications through the air to their customers," says Mr. Gerhard Romen, Vice President, Sales and Marketing, Nokia Wireless Software Solutions. "Booking airline tickets, sales force automation, paying bills, etc, independent from time and place -- a whole new world is opening for the mobile phone user," The server is based on a 100% compliant implementation of the WAP v1.0 protocol stack, as defined by the WAP Forum.
In many businesses, security of mobile services is extremely important. Therefore a high-level end-to-end security solution will be available as an option. It encrypts all traffic on the wireless network, and includes certificate-based authentication. The Nokia WAP Server is currently in its pilot phase, with the commercial release of the product expected towards the end of this year.
The Nokia WAP Server is offered by Nokia Wireless Software Solutions, a Nokia unit focusing on the development of WAP technology and mobile solutions and applications for corporations and service providers, as well as mobile software platforms for software developers and system integrators.
The Nokia WAP Server complements Nokia's commitment towards the Wireless Application Protocol, WAP, supporting open applications for the mobile world. Nokia recently introduced the world's first WAP compliant phone, the Nokia 7110 GSM dual band phone. Nokia Artus Messaging Platform, a WAP solution for the telecom network, allows operators to build a value-added service environment for bringing web-based global and local information to any mobile phone user. The Nokia WAP Server for corporate markets now opens up new business opportunities for corporations by enabling mobile access both to existing and totally new services.
WAP is an open global standard for communication between a mobile handset and the Internet or other computer application. WAP-based technology enables the design of advanced, interactive and real-time mobile services, such as mobile banking or Internet based news services, which can be used in digital mobile phones or other mobile devices.
