Gemplus Delivers The First Complete Mobile Service Solution Based On SIM Toolkit And Over The Air Technology

The Danish operator Mobilix launches "A La Carte Inside" that allows subscribers to customize their mobile phones with services they want

New Mobile Services A La Carte

The "A La Carte Inside" is a new Mobilix package composed of a GemXplore 98 SIM card and a Siemens C25 handset. The SIM card contains a predefined set of menus that give access to a variety of information services (News, directory enquiries, weather, pizza, flower delivery, horoscope, cinema, jokes and drink recipes). If the subscriber wishes to change or add a new menu to his mobile phone, he simply goes to the Mobilix web site and downloads the new pack of services he wants (travel information, sports news, chat lines…).

For the first time, a subscriber can download SIM Toolkit applications after the card has been issued thanks to Gemplus" Over-The-Air gateway: GemMobile Remote Manager.

"A La Carte Inside" is a world first in its domain because subscribers now can personalize their handset according to the services they want," said Christian Ward, Handset & SIM Card Expert at Mobilix. "Mobilix is once again making another step towards the "Whatever, Wherever, Whenever" phenomenon."

"In the world of GSM, the SIM card has become an essential Value Added Service platform. With SIM Toolkit and Over-The-Air technology, operators now have the flexibility to create user-friendly services and manage them remotely," announced Philippe Martineau, Director Wireless Communications Marketing & Product Group at Gemplus. "Most of our customers who offer SIM based Value Added Services have reported that their churn rate has dropped drastically and that they have widened their customer base."

Value Added Service Solutions for Mobile Operators

"A La Carte Inside" is based on GemXplore CASE, Gemplus" SIM Toolkit software factory. The SIM Toolkit application runs on GemXplore 98 cards and for the first time ever, a subscriber can download SIM Toolkit applications after the card has been issued thanks to Gemplus" Over-The-Air gateway: GemMobile Remote Manager.

The application that "A La Carte Inside" is based on is an example of an end-to-end solution that Gemplus can offer their customers: a comprehensive development kit for user-friendly SIM Toolkit based services, cards that can be securely updated and modified over-the-air, a complete over-the-air gateway that can remotely modify the content of SIM cards and a staff of highly qualified consultants to guide operators through the implementation of their new service.

SIM Toolkit

SIM Toolkit is a set of commands that are sent from the SIM card to the handset or the network, on the handset"s screen it looks like a series of menus. Subscribers don"t have to remember number sequences, all they do is scroll down a menu. SIM Toolkit was adopted by the GSM industry as a standard in 1997 and over 30 SIM Toolkit applications are being launched by Gemplus customers around the world.

Over-The-Air

Over-The-Air is a technology where data or SIM Toolkit applications are sent from the operator to a SIM card or a set of selected SIM cards. The information is sent via short messages (SMS). This means that the contents of a SIM card can be updated or changed without having to reissue it.
