(April 30, 1999) - Nokia has been chosen to supply voice and video terminals for NTT DoCoMo's third generation network. NTT DoCoMo, one of the world's largest telecom operators, is at the forefront of third generation development and plans to launch the first commercial third generation network in 2001. Nokia aims to be among the first companies to introduce third generation terminals in Japan, Europe and USA.
"The data transmission speeds of third generation networks enable a variety of real time multimedia services. During recent months Nokia has conducted a number of successful WCDMA video trial calls, achieving data speeds of 384 kbits/s in its laboratories in Yokosuka Research Park, Japan and in Finland," comments Mr. Yrjö Neuvo, Senior Vice President, Product Creation, Nokia Mobile Phones.
The usage of mobile phones is already shifting from ears to eyes as the amount of the services offered to consumers is continuously increasing. Many networks now already allow services such as access to Internet, e-mail and news services, which are based on today's technologies, utilising smart messaging or WAP. Nokia introduced its fully WAP compliant media phone, the Nokia 7110, in February.
Along with the growth of data services the visual impact of information is also increasing. Today we are able to send graphics, icons or still images using mobile phones, such as the Nokia 3210 and the Nokia 9110. With future terminals we will have an abundance of different video and image applications and services available in the third generation networks.
"NTT DoCoMo's commitment to implementing third generation technology has been of great significance for Nokia's research and development in this area. Again, industry-wide co-operation has resulted in breakthrough innovations in a short period of time, " said Mr Ahti Väisänen, Vice President, WCDMA Product Line, Nokia.
Nokia began its research and development in the third generation technology in early 1990's. Since 1997, Nokia has been an active participant in the group developing third generation mobile technology solutions for NTT DoCoMo. Nokia completed the first trial call with a Nokia-made WCDMA terminal on NTT DoCoMo's trial specification in September 1998.
