UNWIRED PLANET ANNOUNCES PHONESTUDIO

A PROGRAM DESIGNED TO BRING OPTIMIZED INTERNET CONTENT AND APPLICATIONS TO OVER 20 UP.BROWSER-ENABLED WIRELESS PHONES

BroadVision, Internet Travel Network, and 724 Solutions Bring WAP Content to Screens of Wireless Phones REDWOOD CITY, Calif. (April 12, 1999) ¾ Unwired Planet, Inc. (UP) today launched PhoneStudio,™ a new program for WAP content and application developers. PhoneStudio is designed to be an environment where developers can test the user-interface of their WML content and applications on over 20 wireless phones from manufacturers who have licensed the Unwired Planet™ WAP-compatible UP.Browser™ microbrowser. PhoneStudio is an expansion of the UP.Alliances™ Program that offers Internet content providers, Internet portals, corporate application developers, and wireless operators the confidence that their applications are maximized for each phone's unique screen and keypad characteristics.

The Internet community has already embraced PhoneStudio. Companies that have confirmed plans to utilize PhoneStudio include BroadVision, a leading provider of e-commerce platforms; Internet Travel Network, a leading travel and ticketing commerce Web site; and 724 Solutions, a software development company creating personal electronic marketplace solutions including online banking and brokerage capabilities for wireless users.

"Unwired Planet's UP.Browser has now been licensed to more than 20 handset manufacturers around the world," said Ben Linder, vice president of marketing for Unwired Planet. "We are now able to provide our partners and developers with an opportunity to create content and applications which work optimally with all of these phones."

PhoneStudio expands the third-party content and application referral services offered by the Unwired Planet UP.Alliances program by helping network operators quickly identify well-designed third-party content and e-commerce services that maximize the handset user experience.

"The natural pull from the mobile operators is now about driving usage with excellent applications¾ at BroadVision we've learned that general information is not as compelling as personalized information," said Michael Kennedy, vice president ofmarketing for BroadVision's European operations. "PhoneStudio accelerates the telephony operator's ability to bring that personalized component to the user in the early introductions of WAP services, with Web-based telephony and e-commerce platforms like BroadVision's One-to-One applications."

"Mobile users suffer enough challenges while travelling," says Gadi Maier, chief executive officer for Internet Travel Network. "Unwired Planet's WAP platform helps ITN extract and display just the key bits of information that are necessary to make a traveler's life easier-flight schedules, online ticket purchase, and hotel and car reservations ¾all personalized with the mobile user's profile so that minimal data entry is required for modifications or changes on-the-fly."

"Consumers expect their online banking, brokerage, and purchasing experiences to be easy and convenient," said Greg Wolfond, chief executive officer for 724 Solutions Inc. "Our applications allow consumers to access their finances and other information they care about anywhere, anytime through a wide range of mobile access channels. PhoneStudio is an important development tool that will help us rapidly create simple and familiar user interfaces for WAP-compatible phones to access the personal electronic marketplace."
