UNWIRED PLANET ANNOUNCES SUPPORT FOR THE WIRELESS APPLICATION PROTOCOL VERSION 1.1

WAP Solution Gives Operators More Handset Choices and Internet Content Developers a Greater Wireless Subscriber Reach REDWOOD CITY, Calif. (April 12, 1999) ¾ Unwired Planet, Inc. (UP) today announced the UP.Link™ Server Suite V4 product line, providing wireless network operators with a Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) V1.1 compatible solution. Additionally, an Enhanced Feature Supplement for the current V3.1 release of the UP.Link Server Suite will enable WML 1.1 content and applications to be displayed on existing UP.Browser™ enabled mobile phones. With these product offerings, Unwired Planet is continuing to demonstrate its strong commitment to the WAP Forum it co-founded.

Select network operators have received an early availability release of the UP.Link Server Suite V4. Commercial availability is expected in the summer of 1999. V4 will bring complete WAP 1.1 compatibility to the industry-proven UP.Link Server Suite, offering wireless network operators a robust WAP Gateway and Service Platform, as well as Email and Personal Organizer Application Servers. With this solution, network operators can provide subscribers with wireless access to a wide variety of Internet standards-based content and applications.

"With the release of V4 of the UP.Link Server Suite, Unwired Planet continues its commitment to WAP standards and WML 1.1," said Ben Linder, vice president of marketing at Unwired Planet. "With over 20 phone manufacturer licensees for the UP.Browser microbrowser, commercial deployments of the UP.Link Server Suite in the U.S. and Europe, and trial systems running worldwide, Unwired Planet continues to be an industry leader in providing complete wireless Internet solutions."

In May 1999, Unwired Planet expects to provide an Enhanced Feature Supplement for its existing UP.Link Server Suite V3.1. This Enhanced Feature Supplement enables the delivery of Internet content tagged with WML 1.1 to any wireless handset using version 3.1 of the UP.Browser microbrowser. Content developers that offer WML 1.1 software are therefore assured that their applications not only reach any wireless subscriber connected to a WAP-compatible Gateway, but will also reach any subscriber serviced through an UP.Link Server Suite V3.1 or greater.

Network operators choosing Unwired Planet's UP.Link Server Suite V4 will be able to support the widest array of microbrowser-enabled handsets in the industry, including all existing UP.Browser-enabled handsets. As of March 1999, over 20 wireless telephone manufacturers have licensed UP.Browser including Alcatel, IGS, LG Information & Communications, Mitsubishi, Motorola, Panasonic, QUALCOMM, Sagem, Samsung Electronics, Siemens and Sony. Unwired Planet has also announced interoperability testing with upcoming WAP 1.1-compliant handsets from Ericsson and Nokia.

Unwired Planet's UP.Link Server Suite V4 provides wireless carriers with access to a broad selection of legacy HDML applications, and the growing list of WML 1.1 applications.

"As a leading information content provider, Reuters aims to reach the widest array of wireless information devices possible," said Paul Kitchen, marketing manager of Reuters Wireless Services. "Developing applications with Unwired Planet's technology enables us to deliver our premier news and information to any WAP-compatible handset without having to reconfigure each service for different user devices."
