Nokia introduces vision for Global IP Mobility - leading the way towards a true Wireless Information Society

(May 11, 1999) - Nokia, a pioneer and global leader in mobile and data communications today launched its Global IP Mobility vision -- proposing a ubiquitous technology approach to mobile and fixed voice and data networks.

Global IP Mobility will unify the core communications networks through the provision of a fully integrated Internet service and application platform, for both fixed and mobile networks. It will boost the level of mobility, Quality-of-Service connectivity and security, for end-users opting for wireline or wireless access to the Internet or corporate information. In addition, Global IP Mobility will be the foundation for future voice-and-video-over-IP services on both platforms.

Global IP Mobility will enable Nokia to combine its existing competencies in cellular infrastructure and handsets, IP Telephony and Fast Internet Access. It will enable the datacom market to move towards mobility, making wireless communications possible, not only over Wide Area Cellular Networks, but also Local Area Networks and "hot-spot" areas, through the use of other radio access technologies, such as Wireless LANs.

Nokia will leverage its know-how in mobility, gained through its leadership in cellular networks, to introduce seamless hand-overs in all wireless networks. This will be made possible using IP network mobility management, based on the advanced GPRS (General Packet Radio System). This is being developed within the 3rd Generation Partnership Program (3GPP), uniting the world's standardisation bodies.

Ultimately, according to Nokia's vision, the Global IP Mobility core network will be connected to a wide range of different radio access technologies, which a software defined mobile terminal will be able to select at any time, maximising efficiency, capacity and range conditions.

"With Global IP Mobility, Nokia is leading the way towards the Wireless Information Society. It is clear that the explosion in mobile communications, coupled with the boom of the Internet is driving the need for new, innovative ways for end-users to stay connected, independent of time or location. Global IP Mobility will demonstrate how cellular and IP systems complement one another, beyond traditional narrowband technologies," says Mr Pekka Ala-Pietila, President, Nokia. "Nokia has already introduced a significant range of elements of Global IP Mobility and we shall continue to launch new products to contribute to the further building of the concept. "

Nokia has and will continue to play a leadership role in enabling the Wireless Information Society through its commitment to open datacommunications and telecommunications standards, together with it's proven ability to deliver highly innovative mobility solutions.

Nokia is the world's leading mobile phone supplier and a leading supplier of mobile and fixed telecom networks including related customer services. Nokia also supplies solutions and products for fixed and wireless datacom, as well as multimedia terminals and computer displays. In 1998, net sales totaled EUR 13.3 billion (USD 15.7 billion). Headquartered in Finland, Nokia is listed on the New York (NOK), Helsinki, Stockholm, London, Frankfurt and Paris stock exchanges, has sales in over 130 countries and employs more than 47,000 people worldwide.
