Nokia to move wireless LAN products toward mass market Portfolio of standards based wireless LAN products to form key component of Nokia IP Mobility Vision

(May 11, 1999) - Nokia, the world leader in mobile communications, today launched a comprehensive portfolio of standards based wireless LAN products, designed to provide broadband wireless connectivity for mobile professionals, and which form a key component of the recently announced family of Nokia IP Mobility solutions.

Nokia Wireless LAN portfolio

Nokia Wireless LAN portfolio combines mobility with high data rates. The wireless LAN portfolio, targeted at today's mobile professional, includes the Nokia Wireless LAN Access Point, Nokia Wireless LAN PC Card, and sophisticated software and utilities to make installation, use and management a seamless extension to a wired network.

Nokia C020/C021 Wireless LAN Card

· based on the IEEE 802.11 industry standard · provides initially 2 megabits per second wireless connections · can be used in laptop computers, high-end PDAs or other devices with a PC Card (PCMCIA) slot, running the Microsoft Windows 95/98/NT 4.0 operating systems · requires no further actions from the user after initial installation the cards · backwards compatible, thus offering a unique growth path for customers · for direct communications between portable computers, the solution supports adhoc peer-to-peer networking

Nokia A020 Wireless LAN Access Point

· based on the IEEE 802.11 industry standard · provides initially up to 2 megabits per second wireless connections and is upgradeable to the IEEE 802.11 High Rate versions as they become available · includes state-of-the-art web-based configuration management and SNMP for remote monitoring · can act as a branch office access router providing on-demand access to the Internet and the corporate network so that all users may share a single Internet Service Provider account · can support up to 30 mobile users, depending on the level of network access connects to wired LAN via 10 Mbps Ethernet connection

Availability

The sales of Nokia Wireless LAN products are scheduled to start in volume in the second quarter of 1999 in US. In Europe, the products will be available in the third quarter of 1999. More details about the products can be found at www.nokia.com.

With the Nokia wireless LAN solution, corporations can expand their existing LAN's, to meeting rooms and shared areas to enable mobile professionals access to networked services with their portable computers as if they were at their desk. It will also be used to create public "hotspots" in places such as airports, hotels, convention centres, office campuses and business centres, allowing mobile professionals to gain broadband wireless connectivity to the internet and other IP based services such as virtual private networks (VPN).
