The Internet goes mobile - Sonofon and Nokia sign agreement for the first GPRS implementation in Denmark

(June 2, 1999) - Sonofon and Nokia today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the supply of GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) equipment. Sonofon will be the first mobile network operator in Denmark to deploy GPRS integrated with its existing GSM network. The installation is scheduled to take place this October and the commercial launch is expected to be take place during the first half of 2000.

The Nokia GPRS solution brings packet transmission technology for personal mobile communications. It will bring IP-based services to the mobile mass market, thus paving the way to the Third Generation mobile networks. GPRS is a key element of Nokia's vision for Global IP Mobility, with which end users will have the capability to communicate and securely access the Internet and intranet services, independent of time or place.

We will introduce personal multimedia for our subscribers, as a tremendous demand for e-mail, pictures, video and other data services is foreseeable,"

Steen Boas Andersen, Managing Director, Nokia Danmark A/S added: "In Denmark we have seen an increasing trend towards mobility. Our long relationship with Sonofon will provide an ideal opportunity for their subscribers to make the most of the benefits that mobility and continuous connectivity will bring."

GPRS technology turns true high-speed GSM data services into reality, by offering data rates of over 100 kbit/s. By transmitting data in packet forms, GPRS can efficiently cope with heavy traffic loads, allowing mobile customers to enjoy fast and continuous connections to the Internet while on the move. Nokia is a leading supplier of GPRS solutions and has signed several GPRS contracts in Europe and Asia.
