The Internet goes mobile - Polkomtel and Nokia sign an agreement for the first GPRS implementation in Poland

(July 1, 1999) - Polkomtel S.A., the leading operator in Poland, and Nokia have signed an agreement for the supply of GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) equipment. Polkomtel will be the first mobile network operator in Poland to deploy GPRS service integrated in its existing GSM network. The installation is scheduled to take place this year and the commercial launch is expected in the year 2000.

The Nokia GPRS solution brings packet transmission technology for personal mobile communications. It will bring IP-based services to the mobile mass market, thus paving the way to Third Generation mobile networks. GPRS is a key element of the future Mobile Information Society, where end users will have the capability to communicate and securely access the Internet and intranet services, independently of time or place.

"As a result of this agreement Plus GSM subscribers will be the first in Poland to profit from advancement of wireless data technology. With GPRS mobility and the Internet are merged. In order to fully implement GPRS we need additional frequencies from 1800 or 900 MHz band," says Mr. Wladyslaw Bartoszewicz, CEO, Polkomtel S.A. "The equipment supplied by Nokia is of the highest quality; consequently, we can systematically expand the range of services to our Customers. We are fully satisfied with the co-operation with Nokia, which is the main infrastructure supplier for Polkomtel's Plus GSM network."

"This agreement is a continuation of the good co-operation that began between Nokia and Polkomtel in 1996," says Wojciech Pytel, Area General Manager, Nokia Telecommunications Poland. "GPRS further expands the high-quality services offered by Polkomtel for Plus GSM subscribers. "

GPRS technology turns true high-speed GSM data services into reality, by offering data rates of over 100 kbit/s. By transmitting data in packet format, GPRS can efficiently cope with heavy traffic loads, allowing mobile customers to enjoy fast and continuous connections to the Internet while on the move. Nokia is a leading supplier of GPRS solutions and has signed several GPRS contracts in Europe and Asia.

Polkomtel S.A. is an operator of a GSM 900 network launched on 1 October 1996. The Plus GSM network has more than 1,100,000 subscribers with a population coverage of 93%. Plus GSM has signed roaming agreements with 140 operators in 75 countries. In 1998 Polkomtel was the first operator in Poland to introduce pre-paid services. Plus GSM subscribers have a wide range of services at their disposal, including free-of-charge voice mail.
