JavaPhone API Specification for Wireless Phones Included in an Approved GSM Standard by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute

Sun Microsystems, Inc. announced today that the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) has included the JavaPhoneTM API specification in an approved GSM standard, the Mobile Station Application Execution Environment (MExE) Release 98, for communicator-type wireless phones.

The JavaPhone API is designed to simplify telephony development without sacrificing its advanced functionality. This announcement establishes an open platform, JavaTM technology, as a core element of mobile telephony.

"Java technology was chosen for its universality, platform independence and built-in network awareness," said Kevin Holley Chairman of ETSI's special Mobile Group 4 (SMG4) technical committee. "The JavaPhone API will allow operators and service providers to dynamically and securely develop and deploy value added applications on mobile phones."
