Telenor Mobil chooses Nokia's GPRS core network pre release solution - enabling test of true Mobile Internet

Nokia and Telenor Mobil, a leading GSM network operator in Norway have agreed on the supply of the Nokia General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) core network pre-release solution, for a pilot system expected to be operational in November.

The system includes the Nokia SGSN, (Nokia Serving GPRS Support Node) Nokia GGSN (Gateway GPRS Support Node), Charging Gateway and IP backbone components necessary for GPRS deployment. The system is viable for commercial GPRS services and could be taken into commercial use during the first quarter of 2000.

With this agreement Telenor Mobil will take the first step to provide true mobile Internet access to their subscribers - offering packet switched data through the enhanced GSM network. Nokia will deliver Internet Protocol (IP) core network infrastructure and radio transmission equipment.

"GPRS provides an effective platform for carrying new services based on multimedia messaging, Internet and intranet access, as well as remote control and maintenance applications," says Trond Wiborg, Telenor Mobil Product Director. "It is important for Telenor Mobil to start testing different GPRS solutions as soon as possible".

"Nokia is pleased to partner with Telenor Mobil. Our market leadership in GPRS core deals is based on our ability to delivery a carrier class scaleable GPRS solution to meet our customer's pre-commercial and commercial deployment needs," says Petri Pöyhönen, Head of GPRS Business Program, Nokia Telecommunications. "GPRS Core deliveries have now been scheduled world wide and we have already made our first deliveries."

Nokia is paving the way to the mobile information society with its innovative products and solutions. Nokia is the leading mobile phone supplier and a leading supplier of mobile, fixed and IP networks including related services. It also supplies multimedia terminals and computer displays. In 1998, net sales totaled EUR 13.3 billion (USD 15.7 billion). Headquartered in Finland, Nokia is listed on the New York (NOK), Helsinki, Stockholm, London, Frankfurt and Paris stock exchanges and employs more than 51 000 people.
