Within ten days of being contacted by Hungarian Mobile operator Westel 900, Motorola (NYSE: MOT) is delivering the Internet to Westel 900 mobile phone users.
The service relies on Motorola's Mobile Internet Exchange™ (also known at the MIX™ communications platform).
The trial is Hungary's first deployment of Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) which makes it possible for information to be viewed on a phone's display. It will allow mobile users there to access Internet content via popular Internet portals such as Yahoo! and SkyGo.
Westel 900 had been looking for a partner to launch a wireless Internet service in celebration of its sixth anniversary today (October 27). After seeing the WAP-enabled Motorola Timeport™ P7389 phone at Geneva Telecom 99 held October 10-17, Westel 900 initiated discussions to begin a trial. The wireless service went into operation within ten days.
