Nokia and Alcatel announce joint testing activity for GPRS

Nokia Networks, the infrastructure arm of Nokia, and Alcatel have agreed on a joint project for the testing of General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) open interfaces. Both vendors have established project organizations to oversee the process and expect successful completion of all interoperability tests between their end-to-end GPRS equipment for 1st part of 2000. This joint activity is to ensure that GPRS systems from both parties are interoperable in order to facilitate commercial deployment of multivendor GPRS networks in 2000.

"Nokia is committed to support the idea of open interfaces in GPRS infrastructure", says Petri Pöyhönen, Vice President, GPRS Business Program, Nokia Networks. "We see the interoperability issue very important. This project is carried out to ensure the full support for multivendor interfaces. As well as bringing IP to the mass market, GPRS enables constant connectivity for advanced value-added services such as those based on the Wireless Application Protocol."

"This joint and efficient activity is to ensure that GPRS systems - including terminals, radio infrastructure and core network - from both parties are interoperable to facilitate commercial deployment of multi vendor GPRS networks in 2000, for the best benefit of Alcatel's cellular customers," says Jean David Calvet, Vice President, Marketing Product Management and Support of Acatel's radio communication activities.
